In Japan's warring states era, the half-dog demon called Inu-Yasha tried to steal the shikon shard a jewel that when posessed can increase demonic power. The priestess kikyo, the protector of the jewel, shot the half-demon with a magical arrow pinning him to a tree for the next 50 years. Later the priestess dies from her wounds and is burned along the the shikon jewel.

In Present day japan a schoolgirl named kagome is transported into the past by a magical well. After freeing Inu-Yasha from the spell they discover the shikon jewel in kagomes posession. They also find out that kagome is in fact Kikyo's reincarnation. When the shikon jewel is taken by a demon Inu-Yasha is forced to team up with Kagome to retrieve it by a spell put on him by Kikyo's sister Kaede. During the fight however the shikon shard is split into many pieces scattering all over japan and now Kagome, who has the power of being able to sense the shikon shards, as well as Inu-Yasha must find them and cleanse them of their evil powers.
