gym brock is the pewter city gymleader. he met ash when challenged by him for the boulder badge. when the gym's defense mechanism against fire emitted a downpour of a shower -- onix was weakened by it and pikachu's electricity that was ensued actually took effect against its hard exterior. ash felt like he cheated and withdrew from the match. brock's siblings and gym were relinquished; and given to his dead-beat father so he could go after his own dream. he gave ash the boulder badge as an insignia for his courage of wanting to become a pokémon master, and followed ash, misty and pikachu to pursue his dream of becoming the best pokémon breeder.

breeding brock wants to become a professional breeder. he idolizes susie, a masterful breeder, and loves to take care of pokémon. having an unbreakable connection with pocket monsters, brock knows many things about them that even novice and experts do not know. even professor oak (ookido-hakase) and gary oak (ookido shigeru) were impressed with his knowledge, unlike ash's own knowledge. his bond is so strong that he can even communicate with them. he could understand golbat's sonar and stantler's dialogue. being an empath to pokémon feelings, he even manufactures different foods for specific pokémon. you can usually find him surveying ash's battles, tutoring him on pokémon actions and attributes. brock does not want to breed all kinds of pokémon, but instead wants to nuture and care for many different ones (unlike misty [based on water] and ash [based on the starters] ).
