James Buchanan

Bucky Barnes was a childhood friend of Steve Rogers (aka Captain America) who accompanies him on his missions during World War II as an Army press photographer. Surviving the war and believing Rogers had died during his last mission, Bucky eventually married Rogers' fiance Gail and had a huge extended family. During which, Bucky (now called Buck) was diagnosed as having lung cancer from chain smoking back in the War. Barnes and Gail both lived to see Rogers' revival in the 21st century and renewed their friendship with him.

Prior to the Liberators' attack on America, Rogers came to Barnes for personal console after distressingly discovered his then girlfriend Janet van Dyne had been engaging with her ex-husband Henry Pym, and admitted in front of Barnes that everyone he knew in the past are gone except for him, and couldn't adjust to the 21st century. Later, both Barnes and Gail were taken into S.H.I.E.L.D. protective custody after Captain America went rogue upon discovering that the Red Skull was his and Gail's illegitimate son. He and Gail later met a captured and dying Red Skull in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s custody, where Bucky was witness to Gail comforting her son she hadn't known for a long time.
