Stephen Strange Jr. is the son of Earth's undisputed master of the mystic arts. The elder Stephen Strange was a brilliant but arrogant surgeon until his drunk driving killed his wife and unborn son; the accident also injured his hands, ending his surgical career. Searching the world for a cure, he followed rumors to the Himalayan home of the Ancient One, who taught him both sorcery and humility, and Strange became the Earth dimension's most powerful sorceror. Returning to civilization after the Ancient One's time on Earth ended, Strange settled in New York. He took on a servant, Wong (part of a long family line who served Masters of the Mystic arts), and a disciple, Clea, who later became Strange's wife. When Strange suddenly vanished, the pregnant Clea searched for him; she eventually gave up hope, abandoningmagic and raising her son to believe his father died in a car accident. When that son turned 21, though, Wong told him the truth about his father. Wong tutored the new Doctor Strange in the mystic arts, using the Ancient One's texts; he displayed a natural aptitude, mastering the basics within a year.
The mage Xandu sought the Wand of Watoomb and learned it was in Strange's house. He bewitched Spider-Man, who smashed through Strange's attic window, breaking the house's seal of magical defenses. Strange halted Spider-Man's attack, freed him from Xandu's control and questioned him. Xandu soon entered the house and overpowered the novice Strange, but was subdued by Spider-Man. The youthful hero then departed, and Strange cast a spell removing his visitor's memories of the encounter.
Months later, Dr. Strange went public as the celebrity "Sorceror to the Stars". The Daily Bugle sent Ben Urich and Peter Parker to interview him, but they arrived just as he was attacked by a nightmare being from a dimensions of dreams while meditating. Wong sent the visitors away, but a suspcious Parker returned as Spider-Man and witnessed Wong's attempts to wake his master. Mistaking these efforts for an attack, Spider-Man again smashed through the window, once more shattering the mansion's mystic wards. When the nightmare manipulator shifted its focus to the unshielded Spider-Man, Strange awoke and entered Spider-Man's dreamscape to save him from the entity. The dream creature confronted Strange with a vision of his father, but this merely angered Strange with a vision, who dispelled it, allowing both men to awaken.
