Professor Xavier spoke with both Alex and Scott about attending the Institute. Scott, the younger of the two brothers, accepted the offer, while Alex declined. Alex and Scott have not spoken since. Alex left his girlfriend, Lorna, in order to join the government sponsored New Mutants. Alex's goal was to become more famous than his brother.
In their first public appearance, the New Mutants were attacked by Sentinels, and Havok did not even get to use his power, thanks to the X-Men's intervention. Following the attack and Beast's death, Havok and the rest of the mutants joined the Xavier student body, with the approval of General Fury. Though Alex wanted to learn about his powers and make up for his freezing during the Sentinel attack, he chose to join Emma Frost on a trip back to her school, rather than stay at the Xavier Institute in his brother's shadow. Whether he will return is unknown.
