Clifford Harlan prefers to go by his middle name, Kenny - or, even better, Kong, the nickname he earned playing basketball and football. Though not a malicious boy, he follows the lead of his fellow jock and best friend, Flash Thompson, and often makes fun of non-jocks such as Peter Parker. He was present on the school field trip where Parker was bitten by a mutated spider, and killed the creature himself afterwards, stomping on it. Costumed crimefighters fascinate him; he was present when Spider-Man first beat Crusher Hogan in the wrestling ring, and again when the webbed wonder took on a Green Goblin at Midtown High; he was thrilled when he and his friends ran into the X-Men at the mall, questioning them about their powers; and he idolized the killer vigilante dubbed the Punisher. Kong followed news reports about Spider-Man, and quickly figured out his classmate Peter Parker was the hero; Peter fooled him into thinking he had made a mistake by letting Kong get in a sneak kick against him in the school corridors. Another classmate, Gwen Stacy, pulled a knife on Kong for this act of bullying, and things remained tense between them for some time.
Kong's greatest moment was probably when he successfully auditioned to be an extra in the Spider-Man movie; though he had only a single line, he was inordinately proud of his big screen debut.
