After a failed armored car heist Flint Marko returned home and beat his girlfriend so badly their neighbors called the cops. When the police arrived, Marko assaulted an officer to the point that he eventually died from his injuries. Sentenced to 50 years in Ryker's Island maximum security prison, Flint Marko eventually found his way to scientists at Hammer Industries, who were seeking test subjects for their illegal genetic research projects. Flint became the guinea pig for their Sandman Project. Granted the ability to transform into a mass of sentinent sand, Marko was driven temporarily insane, unable to control his newfound powers. When the owner of Hammer Industries, Justin Hammer, who was being stalked by Doctor Octopus, called his lab in New Jersey, he was horrified to see how the Sandman Project turned out. Despite Marko's condition, lab chief Dr. Skrtic remained hopeful about his future use. Only a few days later, Doctor Octopus assaulted the lab, killed Skrtic, and lured Hammer there, intending to murder him in front of the assembled media.
After Spider-Man apprehended Octopus, S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Woo and Carter arrived at the lab and found some surviving technicians hinding within. Carter carelessly freed Marko, who went on a rampage before Spider-Man intervened. Attacking both Spider-Man and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Marko was slowed down went Spider-Man used a hose to mix water with his granular form, then was knocked out by one of the lab technicians using an experimental gun designed to stun him; Marko was taken into S.H.I.E.L.D. custody. Housed in the same top secret cell block as Norman Osborn, Doctor Octopus, Electro and Kraven, Marko escaped alongside of them. When the Ultimates raided Kraven's production company, the escapees took advantage of the situation and kidnapped Spider-Man from S.H.I.E.L.D.'s protective custody, with Electro and Sandman causing most the damage. Osborn then tricked an unmasked Spider-Man into joining their attack on the White House by threatening his Aunt May, but when they reached their target, they were intercepted by the Ultimates. Mrko attacked Iron Man, but was hit by a laser which caused him to explode. The clumps of Marko's sand form were later housed in separate jars in S.H.I.E.L.D. custody.
