LEILA DAVIS
- Leila Davis was the widow of the late Anthony Davis, alias the two-bit criminal called the Ringer. After the Ringer was gunned down during the Scourge massacre at the “Bar With No Name”, Leila focused much of her despair and anger on Abner Jenkins, the original Beetle, one of her husband’s cohorts who once used and humiliated the Ringer for his own purposes just before he sent the Ringer to fight Spider-Man. She tried to seek revenge on the Beetle by worming her way into one of his plots that involved the Sinister Syndicate. During this plan, Leila dated Fred Myers, alias Boomerang, one of the Beetle’s cohorts in the Syndicate. She also used her husband’s Ringer equipment to try and take down the Beetle and Spider-Man, but she was defeated and arrested.
- After serving her sentence at Ryker’s Island, Leila contacted the Rhino, the Vulture, and Boomerang and convinced them to help her seek her revenge against the Beetle. She donned a suit of armor, called herself Hardshell, and went after the Beetle with a vengeance. In a strange twist of fate, her husband, the Ringer resurfaced as Strikeback, a cybernetic agent of AIM, having survived the Scourge massacre. But the Ringer/Strikeback had no desire to seek vengeance on those who wronged him, making Leila feel like she wasted her time indulging her hatred. For a while, she and her husband lived a happy life; however, after he quietly passed away when his cybernetic systems broke down, Leila decided that the best way to honor the man she loved was to atone for her crimes. She turned herself in to the authorities, but the Commission of Superhuman Activities got a hold of her and gave her an all-new suit of armor based on the designs of the Beetle. As the Beetle, Leila became a part of the Commission’s super-group, the Redeemers, a team made up of people who were seeking redemption in one form or another. She fought alongside them for a short period, helping them fight Rebel and the Young Allies (both of Counter-Earth) as well as Humus Sapien. She even became close friends with Valerie Barnhart, a.k.a. Meteorite.
- Unfortunately, Leila’s time with the Redeemers and her fresh start in life was cut short during a battle with Graviton, who used his gravitational powers to crush Leila to death inside her own Beetle armor when he compacted the entire suit into the size of a wallet.
