Mockingbird
- Mockingbird is Bobbi Morse-Barton, an adventurer formerly known as Agent 19 and the Huntress. Her costume was designed to give her protection (to a certain degree) from physical attacks and fire. The twin battle staves that she carried were used as javelins and as a vaulting pole. She also fired the staves at people via spring-loaded holsters. As a former agent of SHIELD and member of the West Coast Avengers, Bobbi had trained extensively for combat and was a remarkable fighter and espionage agent. In addition, Mockingbird was a brilliant scholar and scientist.
- In her first appearance, Bobbi Morse, as Agent 19, accompanied SHIELD agent Paul Allen to the Savage Land to enlist the services of Ka-Zar to help find a missing Ted Sallis, a maverick scientist who was working on the Super-Soldier project. Sallis was never found (unbeknownst to all, he had been transformed into the Man-Thing), but Bobbi and Ka-Zar did manage to flush out a splinter AIM group who were attempting to steal the Super-Solder formula. During this time, Bobbi and Ka-Zar became romantically involved, but she couldn’t convince him to leave the Savage Land with her so she left after they foiled AIM’s plot. They met up again later on down the line when Bobbi trailed the subversive El Tigre to the Savage Land. Afterwards, she returned to SHIELD.
- Her next assignment as Agent 19 was to guard a SHIELD lawyer who was scheduled to testify before a Congressional committee investigating some of SHIELD’s overseas activities. After the lawyer was killed by what appeared to be an inside job, the Committee recruited Bobbi, who took on the identity of the Huntress in order to root out the SHIELD subversives. As the Huntress, Bobbi exposed the corruption and then began to compile even more evidence of further illegal activities so that she could take the evidence to Nick Fury himself. She changed her name from the Huntress to Mockingbird during this time and even modified her Huntress costume to a certain degree. With the aid of Spider-Man, Mockingbird managed to get some sensitive microfilm detailing illegal SHIELD activities into Nick Fury's hands, but she was gunned down by corrupt SHIELD agent Carl Delandan’s men. After she recovered in a hospital, Mockingbird resigned from SHIELD and became a free agent/adventurer.
- A few months later, Mockingbird delved into an investigation involving Cross Technological Enterprises, who were manufacturing components for a machine designed to brainwash superhuman beings. It was during this mission that Mockingbird met Hawkeye, who was working for CTE at the time as their security director. She and Hawkeye came into conflict with the villainous Crossfire, the inventor of the brainwashing tech, and his lackeys, Oddball and Bombshell. After they defeated them, Mockingbird proposed to Hawkeye and the two eloped. She later joined him when he formed the West Coast Avengers.
- The most notable moment of her Avengers career came when she was kidnapped, drugged, and violated by the Phantom Rider during an adventure that involved time travel. During their final confrontation, Mockingbird willingly allowed the Phantom Rider to fall off of a cliff after he attempted to kill her. His ghost then tormented Mockingbird for a time and even managed to convince Hawkeye that she had murdered him, which caused a huge estrangement between Mockingbird and Hawkeye. Thankfully, she managed to exorcise his ghost from the earthly plane and was able to mend her broken marriage to Hawkeye (although this had taken a lot of time). During this mending period, she and Hawkeye became mentors to a Mid-Western team called the Great Lakes Avengers.
- However, their renewed bliss was short-lived. Mockingbird was slain in action against Mephisto, denying her and Hawkeye their life together. It has since been revealed that Mockingbird is trapped in Mephisto’s Arena of Tainted Souls, where she and others are in constant combat against the very sins that brought them to Mesphisto’s realm in the first place.
