All About Vivian Vance
Vivian Jones was born in Cherryvale Kansas on July 26, 1907. She took the last name Vance from a dramatics teacher who had been there for her during her formative years in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She pursued a musical career on broadway during the thirties, appearing in minor roles such as Cole Porter's "Anything Goes." In the late 40's, she suffered a nervous breakdown and moved to the West
Coast, where she continued to perform in theater productions. It was director Marc Daniels who suggested her for the role of Ethel. Her role provided her with an emotional stability that helped her with her emotional distress.Vivian rejoined Lucy in 1962 on "The Lucy Show." It remained on the air for six years. She made annual guest appearances on "Here's Lucy." She divorced Phil Ober in 1959. She later remarried literary agent John Dodds. Vivian died on August 17, 1979, after a long battle with cancer.
