My father Carl was a man of many talents. His first love was that of music. He played many instruments, among them were the banjo, piano, mandolin, harmonica, guitar, steel guitar, and violin that I know of. He was self taught and had an ear for music. I personally loved to hear him play the mandolin. He loved and played blue grass music, one of his favorite bluegrass players was "Bill Monroe-King of Bluegrass", as well as gospel. His sons also took his talents and played very well on the banjo and guitar. Among his musical instrument talents he also could sing. He had a beautiful voice and I loved listening to his melody's, he was always whistling a tune or humming if he wasn't singing. As a young girl I remember gatherings of him and family friends for a "pickin" together. He was full of energy and was always very "high voltage" I called him. He loved the spotlight and was a crowd pleaser with his jokes and always had a great story to tell. He was a preacher for a few years in his 40's, following the footsteps of his father and fathers before him. I remember sitting in the pews of his small church and listening to dads sermans, he was soo full of energy the congregation was always on the edge of there seats. His religion was that of the Pentecostal faith, the "Holy Rollers" we were called.
Carl also suffered from a disease called alcoholism. Unfortunately in his time they didn't know much about the disease factor and did not have proper facilities to help or the knowledge in understanding how to treat this disease. It is heredetary and it is treatable. Unfortunately for my father, awareness of this being a disease and proper facilities in treating it were not so known as they are today. He suffered a great deal in trying to fight this disease and without understanding it, the family did not know how to deal with him. It is a slow terrible disease that ultimately took his life.
