  • 450 gram/1 lb. of Lentils
  • 1 liter/2 pints of Water
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • 1 tsp. Turmeric Powder (Pisi Haldi)
  • 1 Onion (chopped)
  • 3 cloves of Garlic (Lehsan) (sliced)
  • Cumin Seeds (Saabut Zeera) (to garnish)


  1. Wash the lentils well and remove any small dirt or rocks. Place in a large saucepan together with the water, onions, salt, turmeric, garlic and the 2 whole chilies.
  2. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 20 minutes until the lentils are soft.
  3. Transfer to a warm serving dish, sprinkle with cumin seeds and serve.
Serving Suggestions: Serve hot with Plain Rice and Mango Pickle .
