DAVE PAISLEY – 18th APRIL 2018

REPORT BY TEXAS TED

Although this was Dave’s first appearance at this still new but steadily growing club, he is by no means a stranger to the South Derbyshire/East Staffordshire audience.

As we fully expected, Dave’s unique combination of his trademark Essex accent and sense of humour, along with his considerable guitar playing skills, deep Country voice and a wide choice of material gave our supporters a very good night indeed.

He pleased both listeners and dancers with his selection of songs, including some made famous by Alan Jackson, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson and many others. Dave has a knack of delving deeper into the catalogues of all the artists that he covers than do most, unearthing some very good material which is not often heard on the circuit. This alone makes him stand out, but when added to his skills as a performer, makes him stand out even more. There is often criticism in these pages that artists all tend to play the same list of songs, which is often demanded by the audience, and whilst Dave did play many such favourites, he interspersed his sets with a few very pleasant surprises.

If the club keeps growing, he WILL be back!

On that subject, due both to the loyalty and generosity of our members in their buying of raffle tickets etc, and a very generous anonymous donation, the club is surviving, but as with all young plants, the shoots are still quite tender, and we do rely on both continuing support and a slightly bigger footfall each time we meet.

Many thanks once again to the hard working staff of The Hilton House Hotel, our “Door Guards” – it was very nice to welcome Sheila back to sit alongside Sandra – nobody messes with this pair – and also to Di for being willing to hold the fort when needed.

But mostly – Yourselves!!

It was also very nice to welcome Sheila and Baz from the Knighton Knights.

Next meeting 16th May with Darren Busby.
