HILTON CMC – 19TH JUNE 2017
REPORT FROM TEXAS TED
This was the second meeting of this newly formed club,
which meets in the very pleasant surroundings of the Hilton House Hotel.
Tonight’s artists were the very popular and highly
regarded duo KALIBRE, comprising Bobby
Reed on Rhythm Guitar and Vocals and Bob
Dixon on Pedal Steel Guitar and Dobro.
Right from
the first number, the popular story song by Billy Currington “People Are Crazy”, their sheer musicianship shone
through. Bobby’s accomplished and polished vocal skills are perfectly matched
by Bob’s very skilful and unique style of playing on both of his instruments.
Throughout the
evening, they catered admirably for all tastes in Country Music, pleasing both
listeners and dancers, with a full floor for most numbers. Bobby’s laid back
and witty humour is also one of the great strengths of this act, alongside
Bob’s winning smile (!!)
We heard
several songs by Rodney Crowell, one of Bobby’ favourite writers, alongside
others from Merle Haggard, Marty Robbins, Hank Thompson and many more.
Kalibre’s interpretations of the George Jones classic “He Stopped Loving Her
Today” and Randy Travis’s “I Told You So” contrasted very well with a
very lively version of the George Strait Western Swing number “Ace In The
Hole” and the more recent revival of Chris Norman’s “Gipsy Queen”. They
also gave us the Keith Whitley hit “Would These Arms Be In Your Way “,
jointly written by Hank Cochran, Red Lane and Vern Gosdin – this being a
special request for Teresa.
Thunderous applause
at the end resulted in Kalibre
being immediately re-booked for 20th June 2018.
