Mel and Mary gave their now usual highly rated performance, encompassing songs old and new, for the dancers and the listeners. Mary encouraged the Hilton CMC choir to accompany her on several numbers, which they did with gusto. She handled each song with her characteristic bubbly charm to Mel’s expert accompaniment on guitar – his “Shadows” Stratocaster which lights up in red on every guitar break! Mention should also be made that many of the backing tracks that they use are also the result of Mel’s own work.
We had a sprinkling of Irish songs which went down very well with the audience, along with memories of Mary’s beloved “Mammy” back in Belfast who has just celebrated her own 91st birthday, and was herself a very popular singer in years gone by.
There were loud demands for an encore at the end of the last set, which the duo duly provided. They are already re-booked for 2018!
This was our “Pre Christmas Special” meeting. It was very nice to welcome Rob & Marilyn from Cross Country Music magazine for their first (and hopefully not the last!) visit to our club. Also it was good to see our old friend Tony who had travelled all the way from Doncaster, armed as usual with a single red rose for Mary.
There were several new people at the club tonight, not least a group of ten who were helping Shirley Barton to celebrate her birthday, and a group of seven who were with Maurice. It was very nice to be able to welcome them all and to express the hope that they would become regular members.
We also had several other birthdays near to the date of the meeting, and each person was presented with a card from all at the club, which had been hand made by Teresa.
Ivor also presented a little gift to Lesley, on behalf of the club, for the hotel’s bar and kitchen staff who have looked after us so well during our first few months. It was very nice to be able to acknowledge the cheerful welcome and good service that they have always given to us, and to thank them for the lovely buffet that they and Colin and Zoe, the proprietors, had provided for our special night.
