Mr San Peppys King

King is a full bodied, well bred, great minded two year old stud colt just starting his cutting training under the watchful eye as well as firm but gentle guidance of Gary Walker of Tehuacana, TX, a small town just east of Waco. Gary is an accomplished cutter in NCHA and ACHA and holds a judges card and judges numerous cutting events during the year. He also has facilites at his place to host playdays and clinics.

King came about quite by accident. In 2000 Jerry and I were looking to pick up another horse, and I stumbled upon Princess, King's dam on the internet in Beaumont. She had just had a colt weaned off her, and was being sold because the lady had too many horses (we've all been there!). We 'talked' back and forth for several weeks, finally we set up a meet in Conroe-about half way. We ultimately met at a gas station on a highway access road. When she pulled her from the trailer and I got a look at her big barreled chest, I looked at Jerry and asked him what he thought...he said one word, "sold." The lady slid up on Princess, no bridle, no saddle, just a halter and lead rope at the gas station, and she rode Princess in the grass there. We were impressed. We took her home and proceeded to look for someone to team pen with. I searched, I looked, I asked around, and found no one close to home. Then we thought about breeding her, that's when I found Peppy, and so far, they have been a perfect match.

Bloodlines and Heritage

King's sire is Pobrecito Peppy, a copper colored pure King Ranch bred and branded King Ranch horse. He is a 1988 sorrel son of Mr San Peppy standing with Sandra Gastell and Seigi Schmidt at Fox Ranch in Clifton, TX. Born and raised on the King Ranch, "Peppy" was sold as a 3 in 1 deal with his dam, in the famous 80's horse auctions, however, there is no recorded foals to "Peppy's" dam after his birth, so it is presumed she died in foal or with complications. King's grandsire, Mr San Peppy is well respected in many circles; AQHA, NCHA, APHA as well as breeders and horse enthusiasts everywhere. In Mr. San Peppy's life he amassed such honors as inducted into the NCHA hall of fame, manaaged a feat few horses can accomplish, became NCHA World Champion, and AQHA World Champion in 1976 as well as NCHA World Champion in 1974. He was also earned a total of 161 performance points, his record also boasts top tens in the NCHA World Show in 1973 and 1977, Superior Performance in 1975, AQHA High Point Performance in open cutting in 1976, and ROM Performance. Of course his most famous and most notable offspring -- Peppy San Badger with his total cutting earnings at $172,710.52. Peppy San Badger, who incidentially will turn 30 in 2004, currently presides over the King Ranch in his special paddock and oversees the daily activities. Pobrecito Peppy is shown below with his "glamor" photo at about age 12, and a 'backyard picture' in 2003.

King's dam, Royal Bar Princess, doesn't have such elaborate history, but, she is still the cornerstone of his temperment and will contribute to his success. King's dam is out of a Royal King mare and it is statisically proven that the 4 of the top 5 all time producers of cutting horses are out of Royal King bred mares. It is obvious that Earl Albin had something going in the genetic make up for his mares with Royal King. Royal King's accomplishments include: Hall of Fame, '97 O AQHA Reserve World Champion, '53 O NCHA Top Ten World Show, '52 3rd NCHA O Superior Performance, '53 O CUT ROM Performance, '57 O NCHA money-earner, COA, Bronze, Silver Performance Point Earner Total Points Earned: 106; Perf Points: 106; CHA Earnings: $24,003. His offspring have pushed him to such accolades registered foals: 590; number Shown: 185; point earners: 172; Halter Points Earned: 426; Halter Point Earners: 62; Performance Points Earned: 3,545.5; Performance Point Earners: 160; Performance ROMS: 88; Superior Performance Awards: 15; AQHA Champions: 10; Total Superior Awards: 15; Total ROM's: 88; World Championships: 1; High Point Wins: 2; Race Earnings: $67; all-time leading broodmare sire of AQHA Champions; all-time leading sire of performance ROM qualifiers. Look at the success of PeptoBoonsmal, look at his dam's pedigree, you'll find Royal King.
This gentle, personality laden, big "bulldog" built mare has consistently passed along her good temperment, and build to her babies. She 'loves' cows; we have been told she was very successful team penning in the Beaumont area. She's quite a lady. The picture below is of her standing with her 2003 filly by Peppy.

Pedigree and Training

King is a very 'collected' horse. If you are in the cutting/horse world you know that means he carries his feet under him and close together, almost stepping on himself, which sometimes he does--his dam does that as well, when she walks you can hear her hooves click where they hit each other.

King and I were circuit champions in the Amatuer Yearling Stallion class at the Central Texas State Fair in Belton, Texas in August of 2003. What a nice birthday present!! Not bad for being 49 and having a stroke leaving me paralyzing totally on the left side 14 months earlier! I think we did great!!!

He's a little thin in the show pic (08/23/2003); the middle pic is taken 2 months later(10/16/2003), then 2 weeks after that(11/02/2003 ).

The future is bright for this smart, young. talented stallion. Plans at present include him to finish his cutting training and compete (and win) the 2005 NCHA Futurity as a 3 year old. From there to continue his show cutting career from there until we which we take him back home for a successful (we hope) career as a stud.

2004 holds a lot of promise for his two year old year. He will be showing in halter classes until July when he can be shown in riding classes all the while continuing his education towards the goal of the 2005 futurity. Show updates, points, awards, etc. will be posted as soon as possible.

Update6/16/04
King is doing well into only his 6th week of official 'cutting' training, and doing great on the mechanical cow. He has great pivot turns on his hind quarters and is a very quick learner. When he gets around the'real thing' his ears go up like radar detectors and wants to get into the middle of those funny looking things called cows! We are all looking forward to his progression as the trainer, Gary Walker of Tehuacana, has nothing but high hopes and praise for this young horse!
