LE GOUT DU TERROIR Paul SURTEL (1893-1985)
09/30/1893 : Paul Surtel was born at
Reuilly, in the Xve century dated Great House of Reuilly (currently
"Café du Commerce"). His parents managed the pub and the
"Moulin de la Cour". 1903-1909 : student at the Primary School
of Reuilly 1904-1907 : student at the college of
Issoudun During this period, Paul
Surtel knew Fernand Maillaud. He'll call him "his good master".
1907 : Student at the Charlemagne High
School of Paris. 1910-1914 : Paul Surtel lives with his
parents in Dampmant and works in some offices. 1916-1917 : He is incorporated at the
barracks of Lyon. 1917-1918 : At the front. "I find a corporal
Jean Surtel who is my cousin (our two fathers were germain cousins). It's a tall
and strong boy, very brown, cheerful like a bird and carefree of
marmitage". 1919-1922 : He is forest guard in the
region of Hyères where his parents moved.
1921 : marriage with Dorothy Bonarjee. January 1922 : His son Denis was born in
Fréjus. 1922-1937 : He lives the life of winemaker
and painter in Jaubergue, near Gonfaron (Var). "The vineyards, I
prefer them bald, not only their grapes, but also their foliages. I like them scaled down
to their winter skeletal structure, when they show to the eye of the painter
the rhythms of their hot tone of the nourishing earth ". 1924 : His son Denis died and his
daughter Arouna was born. 1936 : separation of the two spouses,
Surtel stops the labour. "I will not talk
about my temporal life who seems to be out of breath".
1937 : Marriage with Elia Duc in Oran. "I love your name
-Elia- It reminds the women of the Bible. A whiteness at the side of the
fountain". 1945 : François was born in Sisteron
(Elia's affectation). "When we live the
life of here, between the animals and the trees, in this peace and this space
of happiness who seems to come from the bottom of ages, the madness of the
world seems more ugly to you". 1949 : Pierre was born in Orange
(Elia's affectation). 1954 : Jean was born in Carpentras. (In 1951, The family
bought a house and a place in Carpentras where Elia is affected). "83. I'm hungry of
material things. I painted so much (and better than ever they told me). I
don't like it. I work because it is my way of life". 1985 : Death of Paul Surtel. |
