Maritime Provinces, collective name for the eastern Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. A meeting in 1864 to discuss the unification of the Maritimes was a forerunner to the formation, in 1867, of the Dominion of Canada. The term Atlantic Provinces refers to the Maritime Provinces plus Newfoundland.
