When Do You Need A Pilot/Escort? Depending on the type and size of a load to be transported, will determine whether or not you require a pilot escort. The information below is provided in good faith and is current as of January 2001 from Queensland Transport. Daytime Operations: When travelling in the daytime, an oversize motor vehicle/combination must be accompanied by pilot/escort and police vehicles in accordance with the graph below:
NOTE: In the interest of road safety, restrictions have been in place on movements in critical areas/roads where police escorts or additional pilot/escort vehicles are required. These area/roads are listed in "Critical Areas and Roads in Queensland" map. Where 2 or more escorts are mentioned, the rear escort vehicle may be a Level 1 pilot vehicle unless otherwise determined by a police permit or performance guideline. When height is the only dimension exceeded and the height exceeds 4.6 m but does not exceed 5m, a pilot/escort vehicle may be used without the need for a police permit. However, all other relevant permits must be obtained eg. railways, electricity, Telstra etc. In all other instances, pilot and escort requirements must be in accordance with the requirements on a police permit. HEIGHT When height of unloaded vehicle exceeds 4.3 m permit required from Department of Transport. When height of loaded vehicle exceeds 4.3 metres but under 5 metres, no Police permit is required. One Pilot/Escort required and approval from Railways, Energex, Telstra required. NIGHT MOVEMENT Is permitted up to 7 PM without Police Permit. If load is under escort and journey can be completed by 7 PM and Pilot/Escort considers it safe to continue with no unreasonable inconvenience caused to the public. CRITICAL AREAS Over-dimensional vehicles/combinations exceeding 4.5 m wide but not exceeding 5.5 m wide, must comply with the requirements on the critical area map. Critical area maps depict areas where Police escorts are required;
OVER DIMENSIONAL VEHICLES WITHIN CRITICAL AREA REQUIRE POLICE ESCORT BETWEEN 4.5 M AND 5.5 M. NO PERMIT IS REQUIRED FROM QUEENSLAND TRANSPORT BUT POLICE PERMIT IS REQUIRED |
