Ty began playing piano in church at the tender age of 5. Ty developed his vocal ability singing southern gospel. He won his first talent contest ($75) at the age of 7 (pictured left) singing Barbara Fairchild's "I Wish I Was A Teddy Bear".
He worked at Burger King during high school earning enough money to go to Nashville, where he had a job at Opryland waiting on him and a scholarship in music to Belmont University in Nashville. The day after graduation he followed his dream to Nashville where he sang song demos and jingles and was a member of the Tennessee River Boys who were later to become Diamond Rio.
He gained national attention as a StarSearch finalist but after some a bad management and visiting a friend in Texas, decided that he would like to try his hand at the club and honky tonk circuits in Texas. He moved to Texas where he developed his ability to capture a crowd.
He married his wife (Renee Posey in 1993) and after winning the 1993 Texas Entertainer Of The Year Award was offered a recoding contract with Epic Records.
