Overview of the TimeSplitters Series

By Welsh Dragon Hellfire

Ah, TimeSplitters. With it's development team consisting of ex-Rare employees (of Goldeneye fame), we knew it would be something special. When TS1 came out in stores in 2001, FRD (Free Radical Development), were a small time company. But with TS1, came a new innovation among FPS... arcade. With it's range of wacky and wonderful characters, over 10 weapons, its variety of game modes, and it's frantic Story, the lucky few who played this early PS2 gem were astonished. Of course, FRD wanted more. Upon the release of TS2, it was hailed by many critics, as the best FPS of all time. 128 characters, 13 game modes, and a challenging Story Mode, and of course the newly added Arcade League. There was an uproar of praise. They were still under the control of Eidos (Tomb Raider), so when EA came to purchase FRD, and thus the TS franchise, many people were skeptical. In 2005, EA released TimeSplitters: Future Perfect. In many ways, the EA badge brought a new audience to the genre. Added blood, a REAL story behind the game, and a MUCH improved Story Mode (and MapMaker). But, unfortunately, there were rumours circulating the web that EA had dumbed the game down for a wider audience. Out goes the difficulty, out goes the fun. Lots of blood doesn't equal the quality of a game, and that showed in TSFP, with the Injector being a particularly gruesome way to kill an opponent. But, even today, TimeSplitters is widely known as one of the best FPS franchises ever made. It has a wide cult following (even popping up in "rom zom com", Shaun of the Dead (with TS2). If FRD decide to make a fourth TS game, we can but pray that EA wont interfere. But, the day a new one appears on a store shelf will be a happy day.
