Manning
wins second straight Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning captured his second consecutive Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player award on Monday. The award wasn't much of a surprise considering the Pro Bowler's phenomenal 2004 campaign. Manning, who surpassed records by Dan Marino and Steve Young this season, earned all but one of 48 votes from a panel of sports writers and broadcasters who cover pro football. Manning tied with Tennessee Titans pivot Steve McNair for the award last season, but this time, only Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick drew a single vote. Manning had a season for the ages, surpassing Marino's 20-year NFL record with 49 touchdown passes and Young's 1984 pass rating of 112.8 with a lofty 121.1. The 28-year-old pivot also completed a sensational 67.6 per cent of his pass attempts (336-497) for 4,557 yards with only 10 interceptions. It's the sixth straight season Manning passed for over 4,000 yards. "This wouldn't be possible without my teammates and coaching staff," Manning said during an afternoon press conference. "I am very thankful for the honour." Manning joins Joe Montana, John Unitas, Steve Young and Kurt Warner as quarterbacks with two MVP awards. Green Bay Packers pivot Brett Favre is the only player to win it three times. Manning, who guided Indianapolis to a 12-4 regular-season record and an AFC South title, led the Colts to a 49-24 drubbing of Denver in Sunday's AFC wild-card game. Manning threw for 457 yards and four touchdowns and also ran for a score against the Broncos. He will next take his skills north to New England Sunday for a divisional-round battle against the Patriots. "Individually, I accomplished a lot in a short period of time," said Manning, also named AP's offensive player of the year. "But no question, we did not win a Super Bowl in the time I've been here as a quarterback." With files from Associated Press and Sports Network
