Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield are looking for trouble. Working as summer interns assigned the Scotland Yard beat for the London Journal, they're bored with all the petty cases they've been given. When a series of grisly murders breaks out, they decide to do some sleuthing on their own.
Elizabeth and Jessica discover that the murder victims look as if they've been attacked by a wild animal. Who - or what - could have commited such a beastly crime? The detectives are baffled, but the twins, led by Luke, the quiet boy who is quickly finding a place in Elizabeth's heart, have their own suspicions. Will they find the murderer, berfore he - or it - finds them?

Elizabeth pressed a hand to her mouth, a tidal wave of nausea crashing over her. The body of a man in dark flannel trousers and a camel's hair cardigan lay facedown in the middle of the parlor floor; underneath him, the pale carpet was soaked with blood.
"It's him," Jessica gasped excitedly. "It's the dead man!"
Lucy Friday stood close to the corpse, looking down at it and reciting something into a hand-held tape recorder similar to Elizabeth's.
The side window was open a crack, and at that moment Lucy Friday's clear dispassionate voice drifted out to them. The sight of the body was horrible enough, but her words were even more disturbing - they chilled Jessica and Elizabeth to the very bone. "The victim's throat has been ripped open," Lucy recorded, "as if by a wild beast..."
