Elizabeth Wakefield is suprised when Emily Mayer tells her she wants to join the school newspaper. After all, Emily's a musician, not a writer. Why would the Droids' crack drummer turn to writing, especially when the band is so popular?
Then Emily confides to Elizabeth that she's having problems at home. Her stepmother has imposed a strict curfew and gets annoyed whenever Emily practices her drumming. What's worse, Emily's father agrees with his new wife. Emily's certain her stepmother is out to get her - and she's succeeding. Can Elizabeth help Emily before the situation at the Mayer home reaches breaking point?
Emily was lost in the sound of the new cymbals when her stepmother opened the door to the studio. "Emily!" Karen yelled angrily. "I have finally gotten the baby to fall asleep, and now you've woken her up again!"
Emily stared at her stepmother. "But we agreed that between four o'clock and-"
"I don't care what we agreed," Karen said acidly. "I have absolutely had it with this constant noise, young lady. If you refuse to cooperate with a few simple rules-"
"But I'm not refusing!" Emily cried. "You just keep changing the rules on me all the time! Karen, I can't just-"
"Oh, do what you please," Karen said, heading for the stairs. "Just make sure you cut out the noise. Because the next time you bother little Karrie - I mean it, Emily, the next time . . . "
