At first Jessica couldn't believe her eyes. The lighting was so strange, and everything was in shadow. Across the garage a man was lifting something out of the trunk of a white Trans Am. Something wrapped in a blanket. Jessica's heart was thunping wildly. She felt as if she was going to faint. It looked as though he were carrying a body. He was walking straight toward her, face lowered, the wrapped-up blanket in his arms. Jessica stared.
I'm just losing it, she told herself. It's just some guy carrying something. Liz is right. I have been reading too many dumb detective stories.
Just then the man stopped to hoist the load up, as if to get a better grip. Part of the blanket fell back as he shifted the weight, and Jessica felt her heart - almost literally - stand still. A woman's arm was clearly visible, hanging limply out from underneath the blanket.
At first Jessica thought she was going to scream. Her mouth dropped open, but no sound came out. She was standing absolutely frozen beside the Fiat when the man looked straight up at her, his eyes boring into hers. She knew she would never forget the expression on his face as long as she lived.
