This has to be a nightmare. It's the only possible explanation, Jessica thought. A few minutes earlier, Jessica and her twin sister, Elizabeth, had heard footsteps enter the cabin behind them. They had spun around, expecting to see their mother.
The next few seconds had played out in slow motion. Jessica remembered seeing a glass of water fall from her sister's hand hand to the table near the bunk beds. She remembered water splashing against her own bare thighs, near the heam of her cutoffs. And she remembered recoiling in horror at the sight of John Marin standing over them, his hair damp and disheveled, a straight, sharp knife glittering in his hand.
Now Marin held that same knife, cold against the front of Jessica's throat.
Two weeks earlier, she would have snuggled deliciously into the powerful arm that was wrapped around her her bare midriff. But now it's pressure on her skin made her feel dirty.
