Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield are looking forward to another summer as interns at the Sweet Valley News. Elizabeth can't wait to get to get to work as a reporter; Jessica can't wait to spend time with the gorgeous new editor. Jessica is even more excited when she discovers that a crossed line allows her to eavesdrop on other people's conversations. She loves listening in on the private lives of Sweet Valley - until she overhears plans for a murder!
Elizabeth thinks Jessica's imagination is working overtime, until the body of a dead girl washes up on the beach. The police make a connection between the girl and a local drug ring - and Jessica makes the connection between the voice on the phone and someone who works in the newspaper office! When the twins start to get threatning calls at home, it's time to put the killer's plans on hold before he disconnects them forever!
Junior's voice was abruptly replaced by a dial tone for a moment, and then another line crossed in. Jessica recognized Greenback's voice. As usual, her was giving delivery instructions to somebody - Rock, it sounded like. Jessica didn't pay much attention.
But something in Greenback's voice made Jessica tune in to his conversation. "I've trusted you with a special job, Rock. She'll be at the usual place." Greenback's voice dropped to a rough whisper. "Make sure you take care of her. Don't dissapoint me. Because if they don't find her body floating soon, they'll find yours.
Click. Greenback's voice was replaced by a dial tone.
The receiver fell from jessica's hand onto the desktop with a clatter. She was completely stunned.
Exactly what had she heard this time? Greenback's ominous words came back to her. Jessica shuddered. A floating body . . . Had the two men on the phone been talking about murder?.
