When Todd Wilkins and his girlfriend, Elizabeth Wakefield, land jobs as counselors at Secca Lake Day Camp, the summer is off to a great start - until Todd runs into a couselor named Kevin Holmes. Everyone thinks Kevin is terriffic - including Elizabeth. But Todd knows Kevin's secret: Kevin was in jail, and Todd helped put him there!
Todd suspects that Kevin wants revenge, even though Kevin acts as though he's turned over a new leaf. When Kevin's around, Todd becomes edgy, defensive, and rude. "Speaking of thanks," Kevin said, "I've been meaning to thank you for freeing up Elizabeth so I can have a chance with her."
Todd clenched his fists. "Stay away from her, Holmes."
"She's capable of choosing her own friends."
"She doesn't know any better," Todd answered bitterly.
Kevin laughed. "No one around here seems to know any better. What sheltered lives you've all led. But Sweet Valley's not such an idyllic place after all, is it Wilkins?"
Todd frowned. "What do you mean?"
"I thought I was moving to a safe little town. But I hear there was an . . . incident."
Kevin beat up Mr. Caster, Todd thought with disgust.
"I know what you're thinking," Kevin continued. "You should turn me in. But you're not going to. And you know why? Because what happened to Mr. Castor could happen to anybody. It could happen to someone you care about."
"No," Todd said hoarsly.
"It could happen to someone you care about, Wilkins, but it won't. I know I can trust you to keep quiet." Kevin sneered. "When it comes down to it, we're alot alike, you and I."
"No!" Todd repeated desperately.
