JESSICA
This dance was SUPPOSED to be a blast.
So why is Liz determined to have a bad time?
OK, so her date IS Ronald Rheece.
And so Blue brought this REALLY PRETTY girl from another school.
But Liz is the one who agred to go with Ronald in the FIRST PLACE.
Did I MISS something here?
Ronald stepped closer to me. “So, Elizabeth. What do you say? Shall we accompany each other to the dance formal on Saturday?”
I swallowed. It felt like there was a lump in my throat the size of a bowling ball. There was no way I wanted to go to the dance with Ronald . . . I wanted to go with Blue!
“The dance on Saturday,” I said, stalling for time. I frantically searched my brain for excuses.
“You don’t have a date already, do you?” Ronald asked.
“Oh--no,” I stammered. I’d been hoping Blue would ask me today.
“Then we can go together,” Ronald declared happily. “Right? There aren’t any obstacles in our way?”
I smiled at him. “No. There aren’t. And, uh, yes, okay, I’ll go with you.” Agh! I couldn’t believe those words had just come out of my mouth.
“Excellent. We can finalize our arrangements as the week goes on, then,” Ronald said, as if we’d just concluded a business deal.
My smile wavered. Had I just made the absolute wrong decision. Did I even need to ask myself that question?
