Complete Sweet Valley.
Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield have had lots of adventures in Sweet Valley High and Sweet Valley Twins . . . now read about the twins at age seven! You'll love all the fun that comes with being seven - birthfay parties, playing dress-up, class projects, putting on puppet shows and plays, losing a tooth, setting up lemonade stands, caring for animals and much more!
Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield love being the only twins in their second-grade class. They wear matching outfits to school everyday and always sit together.
But twins don't always like the same things. Elizabeth is excited about taking the class hamster, Tinkerbell, home for christmas vacation. But Jessica thinks Tinkerbell is disgusting.
When it's Jessica's turn to feed the hamster, she forgets to shut the cage door tightly - and Tinkerbell escapes! Will the twins find Tinkerbell? If they don't, what will they tell their friends?
The cage door was open and Tinkerbell was gone!
Quickly, Elizabeth looked under the beds, but there was no sign of the tiny hamster.
Elizabeth gulped. "Tinkerbell is missing."
"What?" Jessica asked.
"She must have escaped," Elizabeth explained.
Jessica got down next to Elizabeth to look in the cage. "Oh, no!" she wailed. "I didn't shut the door tightly enough! You told me to click the door shut but when Steven called me I guess I just forgot to close the cage. What are we going to do?"
Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield are identical twins who sit side by side in their second-grade class. When their teacher is out with the flu, everyone changes seats, and the substitute teacher can't figure out who anyone is, especially Jessica and Elizabeth!
That's when the new substitute teacher arrives. Mr. Marshall is very strict, and the class is on its best behavior. Then the twins see Mr. Marshall getting into a police car. Could he be a dangerous criminal? When the class finds out who he really is, they are in for a big surprise!
"I wish Mrs. Becker would come back," Lois said to everyone in the park.
They all nodded, even though nobody ever wanted to agree with crybaby Lois.
Suddenly, Winston gasped. "Hey! Look!"
They all looked in the direction he was pointing. Elizabeth saw their substitute teacher, Mr. Marshall, walking along the sidewalk. "I wonder what he’s doing here," she said. But the next moment, they all had something else to wonder about.
A police car was slowing down behind him. It stopped, and the window rolled down. Mr. Marshall leaned over to talk to the officers inside.
Why did the police want to talk to their substitute teacher?
Identical twins Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield can't wait until Eva, the new girl in their second-grade class, arrives from Jamaica. When Elizabeth is picked to show Eva around school, the two become friends, and Jessica begins to feel left out. After all, she and Elizabeth are supposed to be best friends.
To get back at her twin, Jessica ignores Elizabeth and pretends to keep secrets from her. She even pretends she has a new best friend. Elizabeth can't understand why Jessica is being so mean. Everything's a mess, and it's up to Eva to help Elizabeth and Jessica become friends again!
Mrs. Becker announced to the class that they would start making Valentine's Day cards. "I'd like a volunteer to pass out the art supplies," she said.
Jessica raised her hand.
"Jessica, how about you?" Mrs. Becker said. "And please choose someone to help you."
Jessica stood up and looked at Elizabeth. Elizabeth looked at her hopefully. They always did things together. But Jessica looked first at her friend, Lila, then at Elizabeth's friend, Amy. She knew how to get back at Elizabeth for liking the new girl Eva better.
"Amy can help me," Jessica said.
It's not fair! One afternoon identical twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield are playing outside when they find a cat that has no home. Cats aren't allowed inside the Wakefield house because Mr. Wakefield and Steven have allergies. But more than anything the twins want a cat o their own. They even think of a perfect anme for her - Misty. Wouldn't it be OK to keep Misty for just a little while?
The Wakefield family was having dinner.
"Ah-" Mr. Wakefield gasped. He closed his eyes and let out a gigantic sneeze. "Ah-ahh-choo!"
"Are you coming down with a cold?" Mrs. Wakefield asked.
Mr. Wakefield rubbed his eyes and shook his head. "No. It feels more like hay fever. It's as though there's a cat in the house."
Jessica suddenly knocked her milk glass over. She stared wide-eyed at Elizabeth. They both knew Mr. Wakefield was snezing because of Misty.
"What are we going to do?" Jessica whispered.
"I don't know," Elizabeth whispered back.
Jessica gulped. They had to find a solution, and they had to find it fast!
"Lila!" Jessica said, putting down her tuna sandwich. She couldn't understand why Lila didn't want to come to their camp-out. "What's the matter?"
"Nothing," Lila muttered. She sipped her milk and didn't say anything else.
"She's a scaredy-cat; that's what's wrong with her," Charlie teased. "She's afraid of the dark."
Lila thumped her milk carton down on the table. "I am not!"
Winston raised his eyebrows. "Maybe she's afraid of ghosts!"
"Or maybe she wets her bed," Charlie said, laughing.
Lila turned beet red.
Elizabeth Wakefield's favourite author, Angela Daley, is coming to Sweet Valley Elementry School. One student will be chosen to help mrs. Daley autograph her books.
Elizabeth works hard to write a story just for Mrs. Daley. But her twin sister, Jessica, wants to win the honor just as much as Elizabeth. She hands in a story, too. The only problem is that the story isn't really hers. Is it too late for Jessica to correct what she's done?
The story Jessica had handed in was on top! Keeping her eyes on Mrs. Becker, she reached out to take the paper.
"Jessica?" Mrs. Beckersaid, turning around. "Do you need something?"
Jessica's face was bright pink. "I um . . . I wanted to make a correction on my story. I just want to make a teensy change."
Mrs. Becker frowned. "I have already read it, Jessica. It's very good." She paused. "So is Elizabeth's."
Jessica thought she would cry. "I don't want you to count that story," she said. "I didn't . . . I didn't . . ." Jessica gulped.
"When did you get those bracelets?" Elizabeth asked her sister.
Jessica looked down at their bedroom floor. "I don't know," she whispered.
"How could you not know?" Elizabeth asked. She was puzzled. She looked over at the night table between their beds, and her mouth dropped open. "Jessica!" she gasped. "What happened to our money?"
"Ummm . . . " Jessica began. Her face was slowly turning red.
Elizabeth stared at her sister. She had worked so hard selling lemonade to help buy their teacher's wedding present. "Did you spend it? Did you buy those bracelets with our money?"
Instead of answering, Jessica burst into tears.
Scaredy-Cat Lois!
Jessica Wakefield can't understand why her twin sister, Elizabeth, is so friendly to Lois Waller. Lois is afraid of everybody and cries all the time. Elizabeth thinks Lois is nice, though, and wants to be her friend. She teaches Lois how to ride a bicycle and tries to help her stand up for herself. Will she be able to turn scaredy-cat Lois into brave Lois?
Caroline Pearce is always bragging about her collection of porcelain dolls, but no one has ever seen them. Some of her friends, especially Jessica Wakefield, wonder if Caroline rally has any dolls at all.
When Caroline opens her case to take out the doll she brought for show-and-tell, there's nothing inside! Did someone take the doll, or was Caroline lying all along?
"You're not really going to make us clean your room, Steven, are you?" Jessica asked. "Mom? Can he make us do that?"
"A deal is a deal," Mrs. Wakefield answered.
"Yes, but . . ." Jessica said.
"A week isn't that long," Elizabeth said. "It won't be so bad. Steven doesn't have that many chores."
"I have alot more than you know about," Steven said, grining.
Jessica and ELizabeth looked at each other. Losing the bet was beginning to sound worse by the second!
Jessica Wakefield thinks she'll have a terrible time on her family's fishing trip to Sun Lake. She doesn't want to touch a fish, or even worse, a worm!
But after spending one day on shore while everyone else is out fishing on the lake, Jessica is miserable. Her new friend, Jilly, turns out to be mean and bossy. Jessica is sure that her twins sister, Elizabeth, and the rest of the family are having a great time. When she finally gives fishing a try, the result is a jumbo surprise for everyone - especially Jessica.
"There's a giant fish in the lake!" Jessica yelled. She picked up the oars of the rowboat and tried to row. The boat wouldn't move. The monster fish was catching up to her.
Suddenly, Jessica woke up and sat up in bed. The room was very dark. Her heart was pounding.
"What's wrong?" Elizabeth asked.
Jessica took a deep breath. She was still scared. "Nothing," she whispered. It sounded silly to say she was being chased by a fish. Besides, she didn't want her sister to know she was afraid. "I was having a bad dream."
Jessica curled up under the covers again and closed her eyes. She definately wasn't going fishing now.
Identical twins Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield need to have their tonsils taken out. They've never stayed overnight in a hospital before, and they're not sure what their operation will be like.
When they get to the hospital, Jessica and Elizabeth quickly forget their fears. The doctors and nurses are nice, and they explain all about the operation. Now the twins know what to expect, but they aren't prepared to meet Moe and Joe-some very unexpected visitors!
"When are you and Jessica going to the hospital?" Eva asked.
"Tonight," Elizabeth answered. "We'll be home the day after tomorrow." She wondered what it would be like to have the operation.
"I've never been in a hospital," Amy said.
"Yes, you have," Lila said. "When you were born."
"That's true," Amy said. "But I meant for an operation. I'd be scared."
Elizabeth knew her friends didn't realize how nervous she was. She looked at her sister. Jessica was biting her lip. Jessica knew how nervous Elizabeth was. Jessica was nervous, too.
Jessica Wakefield is thrilled when she wins the second grade spelling bee at Sweet Valley Elementary School. But that means she has to represent the whole school at the district spelling bee, and she's scared!
Jessica's never been a good speller. What if winning the first time was just beginner's luck? Is it true that her twin sister, Elizabeth, is smarter than she is? That's what some of the kids in the class think. But Jessica knows she's just as smart as her twin. Can she prove it to everyone and win the district spelling bee?
"You don't think I'm smart, but I am!" Jessica shouted. "I studied all week, and I know a lot of very hard words! Maybe I'll even win the spelling bee."
Elizabeth felt aweful. She hated to see Jessica sad and angry.
"Prove it," Lila said. "Can you spell carbohydrate?"
"Um . . . C-A-R-B-O-" Jessica stopped in the middle of the word. Her face was getting pinker and pinker.
"Can you spell the rest?" Winston asked nervously.
Jessica looked like she was about to cry. "I hate you all!" she cried out. She turned and ran back inside.
Identical twins Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield are having a slumber party, and they know that it will be the best ever! They'll play games, eat pizza, and stay up late with their friends Lila, Amy, Eva, and Ellen.
But soon after everyone arrives, things start to go wrong. Lila and Amy have brought identical toy unicorns. During a wild pillow fight, one of the unicorns is lost. Amy and Lila argue over the one that is left, and everybody takes sides. The twins don't know what to do. Will someone find the missing unicorn before their slumber party is ruined?
"That Unicorn is mine," Lila shouted. "Give it back."
Amy shook her head. "It's mine," she said.
"I know it's mine," Lila said in a know-it-all voice. "I can tell just by looking at it."
"But we couldn't tell them apart before," Elizabeth reminded Lila. "They're identical. Let's just look for the other one."
"Why should I have to look for Lila's unicorn?" Amy said.
"Are you sure it's yours, Amy? Eva asked timidly.
Instead of answering, Amy hugged the unicorn tight.
Elizabeth looked at jessica. Their slumber party was ruined!
"OK, who's playing tricks?" Lila demanded, after a soft thump sounded from above their heads in the dimly lit hallway.
"Wasn't that another special effect?" Jessica asked.
"I told you there aren't any special effects up here," Lila said in a quaking voice. She started backing up.
Elizabeth gulped. If Laura Hathaway really was haunting the mansion . . .
BUMP! THUMP! came the noise again.
And then everyone heard a voice. "Ahhh-ohhh!"
Everyone in the group screamed at the same time, and raced for the staircase.
Elizabeth opened her eyes and sat up in her bed. It was the middle of the night, and a noise had woken her up. It sounded like someone was crying.
Elizabeth switched on the lamp on her night table. Kelly was curled up in the guest bed. She was crying. Elizabeth got out of bed and sat down on the edge of the cot.
"what's wrong?" Elizabeth asked.
Jessica woke up and came over, too. "Why are you crying, Kelly?"
Instead of answering, their cousin just started crying harder.
Jessica and Elizabeth looked at each other. They both knew they were thinking the same thing.
What was wrong with Kelly?
Elizabeth Wakefield can't wait for her family's first ski trip, especially since her friend Todd Wilkins is going too. But when they arrive at the ski resort Todd makes friends with a boy named Mark. Soon the boys are together almost all the time, and Elizabeth feels left out. When Todd asks her to come with him on a difficult ski trail, Elizabeth isn't sure what to do. She promised her parents she'd stay on the beginner trails, but she also wants to sepnd time with Todd.
Will she break her promise and go with him down the steep and dangerous slope?
"I get to be on Elizabeth's team!" Todd said. "She never loses at Scrabble."
"OK," Elizabeth said. She felt much happier than she had all day. She knew Todd wanted to be on her team because they were friends, not just because she was a good player.
"Hey, there's Mark," Steven said suddenly.
"Where?" Todd asked, turning around. "Let's go see what he's doing."
Both boys stood up. "You two can go ahead and play without us," Steven told the twins.
Elizabeth looked up at Todd with a hurt expression on her face. "But I thought we were a team," she said softly.
Jessica Wakefield and her friends Lila and Ellen have formed a club called the Orchids. Jessica wants her twin sister, Elizabeth, to join, but Elizabeth thinks the Orchids are too snobby. She starts her own club called the Sunflowers. Soon Jessica and Elizabeth can't stop arguing about which club is better. Will the twins ever be best friends again?
"we're going to find an orchid name for you, too," Ellen said.
Elizabeth looked surprised. "I don't want an orchid name. Didn't Jessica tell you? I'm not joining your club."
Jessica felt embarrassed. She wished Elizabeth would go away.
"I'm in my own club," Elizabeth said. "Anyone can be in it without needing any stupid silk flower."
"I think the Sunflower Club is stupid," Jessica blurted out angrily.
Elizabeth frowned. "It is not, Jess."
"My name is Vanilla!" Jessica shouted.
Elizabeth looked as if she might cry.
"You guys sure are good at picking up garbage," Bruce Patman said in a taunting voice. He took a big gulp from the can of soda he was holding. "But you're wasting your time."
"Oh, really?" Elizabeth said, feeling angry.
She and Jessica and their classmates were all helping to turn a garbage-filled city lot into a park.
"My dad is just going along with this for fun," Bruce boasted. "He's definitely going to buy this piece of land and build a garage. It'll make him a lot of money."
Jessica pointed a finger at him. "He doesn't get to decide. The city council does."
Bruce just smiled. Then he took the last swallow of soda and dropped the can on the ground. "Here's some more litter for you to pick up." He laughed and walked away.
Elizabeth and Jessica tiptoed into the Animal Hour studio and hurried up to the seats where they had watched the show.
Just then, Dr. Snapturtle walked onto the stage. His dog, Duke, was trotting behind him, wagging his tail. Duke saw the piece of fish that had spilled from the bucket and picked it up in his mouth.
Dr. Snapturtle turned around and saw what Duke was doing. "Put that down!" he yelled.
Elizabeth froze. There was no reason for Dr. Snapturtle to scold Duke so strongly.
"That was mean," she finally blurted out.
Dr. Snapturtle glanced up and noticed the twins for the first time.
Then Jessica and Elizabeth dashed out of the studio.
"Andy is awfully brave. I'll never make fun of him again," Jessica said.
"If he makes it back alive," Charlie said.
"Look!" Lila gasped.
They all turned to look again. The alien was pointing in the direction from which it had come.
"He must be pointing toward his spaceship," Todd whispered.
"Andy isn't going with him, is he?" Elizabeth asked fearfully.
As they all watched, the alien put it's arm across Andy's shoulders.
"He's being kidnapped!" Lila moaned.
Identical twinsJessica and Elizabeth Wakefield are off on a family trip to the Grand Canyon. They have lots of fun until they find an unexpected canyon treasure - a diamond ring. For once the twins can't agree on what to do. Jessica wants to keep the ring. Elizabeth wants to sell it and buy something else with the money. One of the twins has to give in. But which one will it be?
"Maybe we should sell the ring and use the money to get something we can use now."
Jessica stared at her. "No way! What could be better than a diamond ring?"
"But Mom won't even let us wear it," Elizabeth reminded her.
Jessica pouted. "We're supposed to agree, Liz. You should agree with me."
"Why? You should agree with me," Elizabeth said.
They looked at one another in silence. One of them had to give in, but which one?
Identical twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield are looking forward to having weekend guests. But when Eric and Wesley Nelson arrive, their practical jokes soon begin to drive the twins crazy. The boys start off by hiding Jessica's favourite stuffed animal - and that's only the beginning. Worst of all, the twins keep getting blamed for everything. They decide there's only one thing to do - run away from home!
Eric and Wesley were standing right below the window. Jessica glanced at her sister and nodded. "Now," she whispered.
Elizabeth jumped up. She had a water balloon ineach hand. She dropped them out the window. One balloon landed right on Eric's head. The other exploded on the grass and got both boys wet.
"Hey!" Eric and Wesley yelled. "Cut it out!"
"We got them!" Elizabeth yelled.
Jessica burst out laughing. She and Elizabeth had gotten back at the boys fair and square!
There's a new boy at school named Kisho Murasaki. At first Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield and all their friends like Kisho a lot. But then everyone finds out that Kisho has been left back a year. Suddenly nobody wants to be his friend anymore because they think he's stupid.
Elizabeth knows her classmates are wrong about Kisho - but how can she prove it to them?
"You mean this is your second time in the second grade?" Elizabeth couldn't help asking.
Kisho nodded.
Lila looked suspicious. :How old are you going to be on your birthday?" she wanted to know.
"Nine," Kisho said. Everyone else in the second grade was seven or eight.
"Kisho must be dumb," Lila whispered to Jessica. "And I'm not going to be friends with a dumbo!"
Elizabeth Wakefield is scared! Halloween is only a few days away, and Elizabeth suspects that Caroline Pearce may be a witch-a bad witch. When Caroline catches Elizabeth spying on her, Elizabeth really starts to worry. Is Caroline truly a witch? And if she is, is she going to cast a nasty Halloween spell on Elizabeth?
Jessica, Elizabeth, and Eva sneaked into the Pearce's backyard. "Double, double, toil and trouble! Fire burn, and cauldron bubble!" they heard someone chant.
"Caroline's casting a spell!" Eva whispered. "We've got to get a closer look."
Jessica pulled on Elizabeth's arm. "I say we get out of here."
Just then Caroline poked her head out of the garage. "What are you doing here?" she asked. "You're spying on me, aren't you?"
Elizabeth gulped. "Are - are you a good witch?"
"No, I'm a wicked witch," Caroline said. "The most wicked witch in the whole school! And don't you forget it!"
Elizabeth took a few steps back. Caroline had just admitted that she was a witch!
"Are you really going to help serve dinner at the shelter for homeless people on Thanksgiving?" Suzie asked at recess.
Jessica frowned. "I'm not sure. My parents want us to," she said. "But I don't think I will."
"You shouldn't," Suzie said. "It's a horrible, rotten place."
"How do you know?" Jessica asked.
Suzie turned pink. "Oh, I, um . . . I went there once with my mother to drop off old blankets. I couldn't wait to leave."
"Really?" Jessica said.
"And besides, Thanksgiving is best at your own home, not with strangers you don't know," Suzie continued. "I wouldn't go for anything."
When Elizabeth Wakefield breaks her arm, she starts getting alot of attention. This makes her twin sister, Jessica, so angry that she votes against Elizabeth in an important class election. Now Elizabeth is upset. Is this the beginning of the twins biggest feud ever?
Elizabeth sat down on a big branch and looked around. From up in the tree, she could see the roof of Amy's house. A breeze was blowing. "It's nice up here," she said.
Suddenly, there was a loud cracking sound. Elizabeth looked at the branch she was sitting on. It was starting to break.
"Elizabeth, move!" Amy yelled.
"Give me your hand," Jessica told her sister.
Elizabeth started to inch toward Jessica. But it was too late. With another loud CRACK, the branch broke. Elizabeth slipped, crashed through the lower branches, and fell all the way to the bottom.
After Elizabeth Wakefield buys a video game called Goin' Wild, her whole personality seems to change. She starts failing behind on her homework, and she practically ignores her twin sister, Jessica. All Elizabeth cares about is getting the highest score on her game. Will Elizabeth ever be her old self again?
"What's your score?" Todd asked.
Yawning, Elizabeth passed the Hall of Fame button on her video game. "Twenty-two thousand, five hundred points," she said proudly. "I played under the covers late night with a flashlight after I went to bed."
"Pretty good," Todd said.
"Pretty good," Andy agreed. "But I'm up to twenty-three thousand points. That means I'm ahead of both of you."
"Really?" Elizabeth covered her mouth with one hand while she yawned again. She couldn't believe Andy was still beating her best scores. "well, I'm getting better, so watch out!"
Jessica crossed her arms in front of her chest. "For your information, I do not want my car to be like Elizabeth's."
"Steven just wants to help you," Elizabeth said as she came in to the garage. "You should listen. He is older than you are."
"He's older than you, too," Jessica yelled. "And you don't let him tell you what to do. So stop bossing me around just because you're four minutes older. I'm sick of it. And I'm sick of you!"
Elizabeth's face turned red. "Shut up," she yelled back.
"I will not. It used to be fun having a twin sister," Jessica went on. "But it isn't fun anymore - it's a big pain."
"Are you OK, Eva?" Elizabeth asked. "You seem sad."
"Yeah, you look so gloomy," Jessica agreed. "And you shouldn't be. 'Hand-flip' is a good game. I'm glad you taught it to us."
"So am I," Amy said. "Even if it does have a really weird name."
To everyone's surprise, Eva suddenly began to cry.
"I didn't mean it!" Amy said. "I was just kidding. It's a good name!"
"That's not it," Eva sobbed.
"Then what's wrong?" Jessica asked, putting her arm around Eva's shoulders.
Eva wiped the tears from her eyes. "I might have to move away soon."
When Ellen Riteman's mother starts working, Ellen and her older sister get to stay home without a baby-sitter every day after school. The rest of the kids at Sweet Valley Elementary School think that sounds really cool. Identical twins Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield decide that they want to be latchkey kids, too! But can they get their parents to treat them lik grown-ups?
The twins got on their bikes and pedaled off. At the end of their block, Jessica turned her bike down Penelope Lane.
"Where are you going?" Elizabeth asked, following close behind. "This isn't the way to the park."
"We're not going to the park. We're going to Ellen's," Jessica said firmly.
"I don't know," Elizabeth said. "we're not supposed to go to friends' houses when no adults are home."
Jessica frowned. "That's just one of the stupid rules Mom and Dad made up because they think we're babies. Anyway, if Debbie and Ellen have fun staying by themselves, they'll have a terrific time with us there."
Elizabeth thought for a minute. Finally she sighed. "All right, I give up. Let's go."
Identical twins Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield can't wait for their cousin Robin to come for a visit. But when Robin arrives, both twins like her so much that they don't want to share her, even with each other. Soon they're fighting for Robin's attention. Can the three girls ever learn to play together?.
Robin shrugged. "Both sound like fun."
"Well, I want to play tag," Elizabeth said.
"Jump rope," Jessica said.
"Tag," Elizabeth said.
"Come on, you two," Robin pleaded. "It's no big geal."
"Right," Elizabeth said. "So let's play tag."
Jessica stomped her foot. "No! That's not fair."
Amy ran up. "Does anyone want to play on the swings? There are two open."
Robin smiled at Amy. "I love swings. See you guys later!"
Elizabeth and Jessica watched as their cousin ran off with Amy.
"Thanks a lot, Jessica," Elizabeth said. "Now look what you've done."
"Me?" Jessica said. "It's all your fault."
The twins glared at each other.
Elizabeth could see the silver teapot, the cream pitcher, and the sugar bowl she and Jessica had played with, but she didn't see the sugar tongs. She tried to kick Jessica under the table.
"Elizabeth, please don't squirm," Mrs. Wakefield said. "Mrs. T. will think I haven't taught you good manners."
"I'm sorry," Elizabeth mumbled. But just to make sure that the tongs were indeed missing, Elizabeth edged to the side of her chair and stood halfway up.
"It isn't polite to leave the table in the middle of a meal, young lady," Mrs. Taylor said sharply.
With a desperate look at Jessica, Elizabeth sat back down. She had a clear view of the tray, and the tongs were nowhere to be seen. Her appetite disappeared too.
#42. Jessica's Monster Nightmare
-
Frightening dreams about a monster are keeping Jessica awake all night. The kids at school tease her when they hear she's having bad dreams, and that just makes her nightmares worse! How can Jessica get rid of the monster in her dreams so she can sleep again?
The Halloween Goblin
"I'm going to go through the haunted house first thing," Charlie Cashman bragged to Jessica. "Maybe I'll see the goblin everyone's talking about."
"I'm going to go there last," Jessica said as she got on the bus behind him. "The rides and booths are going to be more fun."
Charlie turned and rolled his eyes. "I bet you're too chicken to go in the haunted house. You are a girl."
Jessica stuck her tongue out at Charlie. "Don't let him bother you," Elizabeth whispered in Jessica's ear. She followed Jessica to the back of the bus.
"I don't care what Charlie says," Jessica said, plopping down in a seat by the window. "I just wish he would leave me alone."
When Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield spend Thanksgiving weekend on a Mohave reservation, they discover that not all Native Americans wear headdresses, sleep in tepees, and do rain dances. Water Lily, or Ann, as she likes to be called, certainly doesn't. She hates everything to do with Indian traditions - especially her grandfather, Gray Eagle. Can the twins make Ann proud of her roots?
"Liz, guess what?" Jessica said. "I met a storyteller. He knows tons of great stories from long ago. And he gave me an eagle feather!" She held it up, then turned to Ann. "Do you know Gray Eagle?"
"He's my grandfather," Ann said.
"Really?" Jessica said. "That's excellent."
"If you say so," Ann said. "He's just a stupid old man. I don't pay attention to him. All he's interested in is Indians. Bo-ring."
Jessica felt herself getting angry. "I think you're the one who's stupid," she told Ann.
"Me? You don't know anything," Ann yelled. "Just mind your own business." She stomped off, looking furious.
Jessica turned to Elizabeth. "What's wrong with her?"
Jessica jumped off the piano bench and dropped a curtsy. "Julie showed me how. Why don't you try it? We have to learn before recital."
"I don't want to," Elizabeth said.
"It's easy," Jessica told her. "But we have to make sure we curtsy at the same time."
"I don't care!" Elizabeth yelled. "I don't want to curtsy! Curtsies are stupid and I hate them." CLLAANG! She hit the piano keys with her fist. "I hate this dumb piano too," she added. "I could be at the stables with Amy. It's all your fault I'm stuck here."
Elizabeth got up and ran upstairs.
"What's wrong with her?" Steven asked. "She sounds kind of angry."
Jessica smirked at him. "Mind your own business."
Is Mrs. Otis leaving the second grade - and being replaced by a student teacher? Not if Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield have their way. They plan to have everyone in class make life miserable for Ms. Kovac so she won't want the job. And the plan works! The Jessica finds out that Ms. Novac won't be teaching ever again because she can't seem to handle kids. Now jessica feels terrible.
But can the class help Ms. Kovac - without losing Mrs. Otis?
Jessica was getting an idea.
"Maybe we could fix it so the new teacher doesn't want Mrs. Otis's job," she said thoughtfully.
"What do you mean?" Lila asked.
"We can act like rascals," Jessica said.
Todd began to smile. "Yeah. If we're really rotten and horrible, she won't want to be our teacher."
Elizabeth stared at Jessica. "Is that what you mean? You think we should be bad on purpose? When Mrs. Otis asked us to be good?"
Jessica crossed her arms and looked seriously at her sister. "Do you want Mrs. Otis to get kicked out?"
#47. Elizabeth, the Tattletale
Todd sighed. "OK. So I cheated. Big deal." "It's a big deal. Especially if you get caught," Elizabeth said.
Todd looked scared. "You're not going to tell on me, are you?"
"No," Elizabeth said slowly. "But what if Mrs. Otis catches you?"
Todd laughed. "I'm not going to get caught. Cheating is easy."
Lila Fowler can't stop bragging about her April Fools' Day party. She's invited everyone in her second-grade class. Then identical twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield find out that Lila isn't even allowed to have a party. At the last minute Lila explains it was just an April Fools' joke. But the class isn't fooled. Jessica and Elizabeth have told them the truth - and now they're about to play the biggest April Fools' prank on Lila!
#49. Jessica's Mermaid - Cover coming soon
Jessica Wakefield has been "crying wolf," and her friends are getting tired of it. The class trip to an ocean preserve has barely begun, but Jessica claims she's already spotted a killer whale and a giant squid. So when Jessica says she sees a mermaid, no one believes her. Ms. Loomis nodded. "That's right. When I heard that your family has two sets of identical twins, I just couldn't resist finding out more."
Elizabeth's nervous, floating feeling began to feel like a bagful of butterflies banging around her stomach.
But maybe Ms. Loomis wouldn't ask too many questions
"Now, you're Bob right?" Ms. Loomis asked Steven.
Steven nodded. "Umm, yes, I'm Bob, and Steven is--um..." His voice trailed off.
"In the bathroom," Elizabeth blurted out.
"Well, when he joins us, I'll feel like I'm just seeing double everywhere I look," Ms. Loomis said with a laugh.

Lois hopped off the box and ran to her mother.
"You're twenty minutes late," Mrs. Waller told Lois. "I was worried sick."

Jessica couldn't imagine anything more embarrassing. "Poor Lois," she said, shaking her head. "I'd hate to have Mrs. Waller as my mom."

Frowning, Julie stepped forward. She only came up to Charlie's chin. "I can learn karate, and nobody can stop me."
"Yeah," Jessica said loudly. "I bet she'll be the best in the whole class."
Some of the boys began to laugh, and Julie looked back at Jessica with a startled expression.
"Why did you say that?" Julie whispered.
"Sorry," Jessica whispered back. "But they were really bugging me. And I bet you will be the best."
"You think I could?" Julie asked, her face lighting up.
"You will, you'll see," Jessica said. "You'll be better than all those boys, and then they'll have to stop showing off once and for all."

"Yes! It's the best movie in the world!" Jessica said.
Mrs. Otis smiled. "Of course you can ask her. But I hope you won't be too disappointed if she can't come."
Jessica headed to her seat and smiled at her twin. "Daisy will say yes," she told Elizabeth. "I just know it."
"Congratulations," said Mrs. Armstrong. "I heard you two are television stars."
"That's right," Jessica said. "See?" she whispered to me. "I told you we were stars!"
"I guess you're right!" I replied.
"Make sure you act like a star," Jessica said.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"People don't want television stars to act like everyone else," Jessica explained.
"How do they do they want them to act?" I asked.
"Different," Jessica said. "A little better than everyone else."
I didn't really want to act better than everyone else. It didn't sound like fun. But Jessica knew more about being a star than I did. I decided to give it a try.

Our class took a field trip to a pumpkin patch! Everyone had fun . . . everyone except me and my twin sister, Elizabeth. We think we saw a witch! Is the Sweet Valley pumpkin patch haunted? I'm going back to find out!
The old bus made a creaking sound as we turned the corner into the pumpkin patch.
Pumpkins and vines were spread everywhere. The wind blew and scattered leaves across the ground.
A scarecrow's arm waved all by itself.
"Look, that scarecrow's alive," Charlie said.
I shivered. It did look alive!
"It's just the wind," Elizabeth whispered.
The bus screeched and rolled to a halt I stared out at the pumpkin patch.
Goose bumps shimmied up my arms. There were orange goblins growing up out of the ground instead of pumpkins!
In the words of 7-year-old Elizabeth Wakefield . . .
Our class is having an art show. My painting was the best!
It had lots of macaroni pasted on it. But now my macaroni is missing!
Who ruined my painting? Time to use my noodle...and find out!
Elizabeth.
"Where's Caroline?" Lila asked, looking around the playground. I glanced around too but didn't see her.
Lila thumped her finger on her chin. "You know what, Elizabeth? I saw Caroline leave lunch early. Maybe she snuck back to the room and tore the macaroni off your project."
Jessica's mouth dropped open. "Maybe! She was awfully jealous."
I gasped. Caroline would never do something that sneaky. Would she?

Nobody wanted to answer that one.
