Could Elizabeth be cooler than Jessica?
Elizabeth Wakefield loves Halloween, and this year she designs some cool jack-o-lantern earrings just for fun. Her twins sister, Jessica, tells her their dorky. But at school the earrings are a big hit - even among Jessica's friends in the exclusive Unicorn Club!
Jessica can't let her friends forget that she is the twin with the fashion sense. She tells everyone the pumpkin design is hers.
And when she starts selling her spooky earrings to her friends and classmates, everyone is so impressed that Jessica is certain she'll be elected Sweet Valley Middle School Queen of Halloween.
But Elizabeth knows Jessica's pumkin popularity is built on a lie. How will she prove that she's the real designer . . . and that Jessica's a cheap imitation?
It's only a little lie . . . "Jessica, these are wonderful!" exclaimed Mr. Sweeney, the art teacher. He was wearing a vampire costume and had had his face painted bright orange by the drama club. He held up the earrings Jessica had just handed in, turning them to get e batter look.
"Thanks, Mr. Sweeney," Jessica said, glad that Elizabeth was in a different art class.
Several other students clustered around to get a good look. "Those earrings are really wild, Jessica," Ellen said. She straightened the belt on her Peter Pan costume. "I can't believe you made them."
Jessica decided to take that as a compliment. "Thanks," she said, trying to sound modest. "They're actually pretty simple. It didn't take me any time at all to make them. At least that's the truth, she thought with a secret smile.
"Nonsense, Jessica," Mr. Sweeney said. "Don't downplay your own work. You should be proud of yourself. You've finally found a way to turn your love of fashion into something useful and creative. These show real talent - not to mention pumpkin fever!"
"Thanks," Jessica said again with a grin, adjusting her clack cat costume. So what if she hadn't actually made the earrings herself? She was actually beginning to feel a little twinge of pumpkin fever.
