With friends like Janet . . .

"Mary, that really isn't your color." Janet frowned at Mary's brown turtleneck. She, Jessica, Mary, and Lila were standing at the water fountain in between classes. "With your face you should stick to bright colors - you know, blue, red, green."
"Really? You think so?" Mary pulled at the neck of her shirt.
"Otherwise you look really washed out," Janet said. "Does anyone have a lip gloss Mary could borrow so she won't look like the walking dead?"
Jessica dug in her purse and pulled out a pale pink lip gloss. "Try this," she advised Mary.
Janet intercepted the tube of lip gloss. "Not pink, Jessica. Everyone knows that blondes and brunettes wear different makeup."
"Oh. Well, I was just trying to help," Jessica said.
Janet twisted the cap off the tube of lip gloss and exacmined the tip. "Jessica, have you really been wearing such a little old lady color? How embarrassing."
"No one else seemed to think it was bad," Jessica said, her face growing hot as she glanced around at her friends.
"They probably didn't want to hurt your feelings," Janet said. "But you can trust me - I'll always tell you the truth. Even when it hurts."
I'm glad you don't mid hurting my feelings, Jessica thought.
