Lois Waller has always been to shy about being over-weight to join in school activities. When the Sweet Valley PTA decides to have a bike-a-thon, Lois finds the courage to ride. It's a chance for her to win a brand-new mountain bike - and it's the perfect opportunity to put snobby Bruce Patman in his place.
Everyone at Sweet Valley Middle School knows how much Bruce bullies Lois. Although Jessica Wakefield thinks that anything Bruce does is perfect, her twin sister Elizabeth disagrees and is on Lois's side. Elizabeth thinks Lois has a good shot at winning. But she doesn't know how far Bruce Patman will go to see Lois lose!
"It's hard to get really excited about the race knowing Bruce is going to win anyway," Lois said.
"Maybe not," Elizabeth said. "Lois, do you have your pledge card with you?"
"Sure," she said, pulling it out of her book bag.
After a few minutes of calculating, Elizabeth turned to Lois with a smile. "Most of your pledges are for small amounts, but you have a ton of them," she said.
"Added altogether, they come to eighteen-fifty per mile! With a few more pledges, I could catch up to Bruce." Lois was estatic.
"But even with as much money as Bruce, you'd still have to ride the whole way to win," said Elizabeth. "Do you think you can make it?"
A look of determination crossed Lois's face. "Don't worry Elizabeth. I'm going to ride as hard and as long as I possibly can. Maybe I won't go the whole thirty miles, but by the time I'm done, Bruce Patman will think twice about bugging me again!"
