When Jessica Wakefield's father asks her to run an errand for him, she jumps at the chance. It's the perfect opportunity to prove to her dad that she can be trusted. All she has to do is deliver an envelope of money for a charity to Mr. Hopper, who lives three blocks away. What could possibly go wrong?
Jessica doesn't know that she's about to be sidetracked by Sweet Valley Middle school's biggest gossip. Or that when she hides the money to deliver it later, her hiding place will disappear! Jessica's inly hope is to find the money - fast. With Elizabeth's help, she'll search all over Sweet Valley. But will the twins find it before their father discovers the money is gone?
Jessica felt instant panic. What if Mr. Hopper had already left? She'd never be able to give him the money! She ran full speed to the front porch and rang the door bell anxiously. No one answered.
"Now what?" Jessica muttered under her breath. She plopped down onto the step dejectedly.
"Might you be Miss Wakefield?"
Jessica glanced up to see an older gray-haired man with a cane, approaching her slowly. "Yes," she answered with a spark of hope. "My father sent me over to deliver something to Mr. Hopper." She stood up, still holding the envelope full of money for the charitable fund.
"I'm Mr. Roberts," the man said. "Jim Hopper's next-door neighbor. He asked me to keep an eye out for you. Jim waited for you as long as he could, but then he had to leave for a dinner appointment."
Jessica's heart sank. She was too late. As soon as her father found out about this, she would definately be in trouble. Big trouble . . .
