Is being a hero worth the hassle?

Elizabeth Wakefield and her friends are walking on the beach one stormy afternoon when they whitness a terrible surfing accident. Denny Jacobson is drowning! Elizabeth dives into the water and saves him.
Now Elizabeth is a hero. Her picture's in the newspaper, and Denny showers her with gifts and attention. But Janet Howell, president of the Unicorns, is mad! She's got a big crush on Denny and is determined to make Elizabeth's life miserable.
Elizabeth decides being a hero stinks. How can she possibly get Denny - and now Janet - to leave her alone? Finally she and Jessica cook up a brilliant plan to get rid of both, but ut might mean putting Elizabeth in danger!

An angry sea . . .

Elizabeth pulled her sweater over her head and plunged into the water, steeling herself against waves that pounded her body. Finally she took a deep breath and dove in, swimming through the icy water in her shorts and T-shirt.
She stroked hard against the waves that kept pushing her back toward the shore. Salt water stung her eyes, but she kept them open anyway, determined not to lose sight of Denny's body.
The water was getting deeper now, and the waves were breaking all around her.
CRASH!
White foam spilled over her head, and the force of the huge wave that collapsed on top of her was enough to push her under. She held her breath and fought the undertow, struggling back to the surface.
As soon as her head broke the surface, she opened her eyes and looked frantically for Denny. But there was no sign of him. Where was he?
