When Jessica Wakefield wakes up in the middle of the night, her whole room is shaking. The next day at school, Jessica is a celebrity: she's the only one who witnessed Sweet Valley's own earthquake!
When Jessica hears reports that another, bigger earthquake may hit, she quickly spreads the news. After all, Jessica is Sweet Valley's earthquake expert! The more people she tells, the bigger and more dramatic the story becomes. Soon Jessica has everybody preparing for a real catastrophe!

"Jessica! It's almost eight thirty!" Lila cried, shutting off the music. Everyone on the dance floor stopped moving and looked around, as if they were expecting an earthquake any second.
Jessica chewed her thumbnail and studied her watch. One minute until my life is over. She watched the second hand sweep around the dial. Each second seemed to last forever.
"Five . . . four . . . three . . . two . . . one! the crowd shouted.
They all stood waiting in silence.
Nothing happened.
"Well?" Lila said, coming over to her. "Where's the earthquake?"
"Uh . . . " Jessica faltered as she noticed a hundred faces, practically everyone from Sweet Valley Middle School, looking at her from all over the room. Dynamite, she thought miserably. I should have exploded some dynamite outside the house.
She would have gone to jail, but it would probably be better than having to walk into school tomorrow morning and fce everyone.
