Be careful what you wish you . . .
Elizabeth stood numbly in the center of the mall, watching the glittering Christmas display wobble and bob through her eyes brimming with tears. She had never felt so tired. Frantic last-minute shoppers rushed around her, but she was too weary to get out of their way. She felt like a rock in a fast-moving river.
She stared at the line of fidgeting children who waited for their turn to tell Santa their wishes.
I know what i wish, Elizabeth thought as a tear trailed down her cheek. I wish I'd never been born.
She closed her eyes, swallowing a sob as more tears came, steady as the rain outside.
