Identical twins Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield and their friends at Sweet Valley Middle School are going camping! Elizabeth can't wait to spend a week swimming in the lake, sleeping in a tent, and roasting marshmallows over a bonfire. Best of all, the wilderness provides the perfect setting for a little romance with her sort-of boyfriend, Todd Wilkins.
Romance is also in the air for Jessica. She has her eye on Dennis Asher, a cute seventh-grader who's new at school. But Jessica can't survive wihtout a blow-dryer -- how can she impress Dennis when she looks so terrible?
So Jessica comes up with a brilliant scheme. She pushes her twin, who looks great while roughing it, on Dennis -- and tells him Elizabeth is Jessica! Todd is cery confused, and Elizabeth is furious! Elizabeth fights back . . . by making sure that Jessica's plan works a little too well . . .

"Hi," Jessica said shyly, stooping down to Dennis's level. "You're Dennis, right?"
Dennis looked up. "Do I know you?"
Jessica shrugged. "Not really," she told him. Which was the understatement of the century. "But I know you I'm - um -" She swallowed hard. "Elizabeth. Wakefield, that is." There. She'd done it.
Dennis nodded solemnly. "Nice to meet you."
Nice to meet you," Jessica said. "Listen, I, um, wanted to talk to you about something."Dennis gazed across the lake and splashed the water with his bare heel. "Sure," he said. "What is it?"
Jessica steeled her nerves. "It's about my, um, sister."
Dennis raised his eyebrows and swiveled to face Jessica. "You have a sister? Is she here at camp?"
Jessica nodded. That much was true anyway. "Her name's Jessica," she said brightly. "She looks just like me , only she's, you know, cleaner? And, um, a tiny bit prettier. I mean, we're identical twins, but we don't look exactly alike," she lied. "Everybody always says Jessica is prettier than I am." And if they don't, they should.
Dennis nodded slowly. "Uh-huh," he said. "So, um, how am I going to get to know this sister of yours?"
He's buying it! Jessica thought excitedly.
