When friends become enemies . . .
Elizabeth Wakefield and her teammates on the Sweet Valley Middle School beach vollyball team are headed for the California Games! The team has everything it takes ti be champions: fast volleys, killer serves, and most importantly a great coach, Sandra Kimbali.
The girls are determined to meet Sandra's high expectations. They're spending every extra minute perfecting their aewsome spikes and blocks. But maybe they're a little too determined: the harder everyone tries to impress Sandra, the worse they play as a team.
Just when the girls think it can't get any worse, it does. The baby Sandra's been expecting arrives two months early - and she's forced to take some time off. The girls vow they'll show Sandra her hard work and dedication weren't wasted. But can they stop blaming one another and put aside their difficulties to win their most crucial game?
The Breaking Point . . .
"You're supposed to hit it to me," Kimberly told Elizabeth over the net.
"I tried," Elizabeth snapped back. "You could have gotten it if you had just moved a few inches."
Kimberly stomped her foot. "You have rotten aim!"
"Oh, yeah?" Elizabeth replied. "Well - you're lazy!"
"Come on, girls," Sandra called out. "Let's try it again."
"Do we have to?" Kimberly whined. "This isn't teaching us anything we don't already know."
"Stop complaining!" Elizabeth called to her.
Kimberly's eyes widened in shock. "Don't you dare tell me what to do!" she yelled back. "I'm the captain of this team. Not you!"
Elizabeth was so angry she could feel the blood pounding in her ears. Why did Kimberly insist on acting so stupid? Didn't she know they were on the same team?
"Why do you keep picking on me?" Elizabeth demanded.
"Because you ask for it!" Kimberly yelled.
"Girls!" Sandra came toward them. "Please - "
Elizabeth frowned in confusion as, breaking off her sentance, Sandra gasped and slid to the ground. Her eyes rolled back in her head and then she went completely limp.
