I've got a horrible secret, and no one - especially the Unicorns - can find out. See, my parents wont stop fighting. Everytime they're in the same room together, there's a big explosion. Mom refuses to go to the school picnic if Dad's going to be there, and Dad says he wont go if Mom will be there. Last night they gave me the bg news. They're getting a divorce.
There has to be some way to get them back together - and I have to do it fast, before the Unicorns find out what's going on. Someone with problems like mine just isn't Unicorn material.
How can I convince my parents they're meant for each other, before I lose my family and get kicked out of the Unicorn Club?
My dad pushed his chair away from the table. "Ellen. Mark. Your mother and I have something to tell you."
I tried to hold back my smile. My dad had this serious look on his face that he makes when he's trying to hide a surprise from us.
"Oh," I said slyly. "Do tell."
Maybe it was the Hawaiian vacation that I had thought about last night. Or a backyard swimming pool or the puppy Mark and I had been begging for. It would be his special way of apologizing for all the fighting we had been subjected to.
I leaned forward anxiously. My dad turned to my mom.
"Your mother and I are getting a divorce," he said.
