Brooksville, OK

Brooksville was the second historically African American town we visited in Oklahoma (Langston was the first.) The Oklahoma Historical Society publishes a post card with a map of the All Black towns that we've used as a guide. In each town, a sign that matches the style of the post card has been placed giving that town's history. We highly recommend this post card map (availible at the Oklahoma History Museum) as a reference for this important aspect of Oklahoma history. Brooksville stood out to us in a way that a few other towns in Oklahoma have: we (as strangers) were welcomed. One gentleman stopped to tell us a bit about the town; another made sure that we weren't having car trouble. We left with a warm feeling for the town in a simmilar way to how we feel about Maud and Mangum, two other places where we've felt welcome.
