2001 Whittemore Speedway Sportsman Rules

 

*Any item of questionable nature should not be assumed legal, said items should be approved by officials prior to event.

 

*Owners and drivers, YOU are responsible for the actions of each member of your pit crew (this includes family members).

 

*All cars must have a full body, doors, hoods, etc., at the beginnings of each race.

 

*The race director shall be empowered to permit minor deviation and impose any further restrictions that in their opinion do not alter the minimum acceptable requirements.  NO EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED WARRANTY OF SAFETY SHALL RESULT FROM SUCH ALTERATION OF SPECIFICATIONS.  Any interpretation or deviation of these rules is left to the discretion of the officials.  Their decisions are FINAL.

 

*APPEARANCE: Cars must be neat and stock appearing.  Must pass inspections.

 

*BATTERY: One (1) only, located out of drivers compartment and securely mounted.  Battery disconnect mandatory, must be within easy reach of track officials.

 

*BRAKES: Must have 4 wheel brakes and all 4 wheels operating.  After market OK.

 

*CARBURETOR:  Holley #4412 unaltered except for removal of choke horn, choke shaft and butterfly OK.  A maximum of 1” thick adaptor plate.

 

*CAR CONSTRUCTION:

1.      Any U.S. manufactured car.  No convertibles, pickups, 4-wheel drives.  Compacts or subcompacts.

2.      Minimum of 101” wheel base.

3.      Body must be made of all stock appearing steel sheet metal.  Aftermarket stock-appearing body panels, such as those manufactured by five star are allowed.  Aftermarket nose and rear panel allowed.  Panels must match year of body and be installed in stock location and angle. No cutting or trimming bottom of nose panel allowed!  Door skins may be fabricated out of sheet steel of aluminum.

4.      A six post roll cage is mandatory with 3 left side door bars and 2 right side door bars.  Roll cage must be no less than 1 ¾” tubing, .095 wall thickness for entire roll cage.  Driver’s door must have a 24” x 24” x 1/8” steel plate mounted outside bars between roll cage and door skin and mounted in such a way as to protect the driver’s body.  May use fiberglass or steel roofs and hoods.

5.      Radiator must be in stock position.  Radiator reinforcement to protect radiator must be behind grill.  Overflow hose must exit into catch can, 1 gallon minimum.  No antifreeze, a fine and/or suspension if caught.

6.      Stock firewall – Stock floor pan must extend to rear of driver.  All steel interior.  Must be sealed from engine compartment and trunk area.  No high interiors.  No aluminum.  Maximum firewall set back is 24” behind upper ball joint.

7.      Approved aluminum racing seats and approved mounting only.

8.      No mirrors of any kind permitted.

9.      All added weight must be painted white and approved mounting.

10.  Rear spoiler allowed.  Clear Lexan only, maximum 68” wide, maximum 6” tall, no more then 40” from the top of the spoiler to the ground.  No rudders or sideboards.

11.  All glass must be removed from car.  Lexan must be used for windshield.

12.  Bumpers mandatory.  Must be rounded on the ends.

 

*CAR NUMBERS:  Must be at least 18” tall and 3” wide stroke on both car doors.  Driver’s name must be on top of car and visible to officials in timing tower.  A 6” high x 1” stroke number must be in upper right hand corner of windshield.  No three-digit numbers.

 

*CLUTCH:

1.      Stock clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel.  No aluminum flywheels.

2.      Safety bellhousing or scattershield mandatory.

 

*DIFFERENTIAL:

1.      May be locked.

2.      Floaters allowed (any manufacturer, no quick change).

3.      “C” clip eliminators recommended on stock rear ends.

4.      When interchanging GM and Ford rear ends, the rear end brackets are to be mounted on the rear end in the stock location matching the type of frame to be used.  Example:  When installing a Ford rear end axle assembly in a GM frame, you must install GM mounting brackets on the rear axle housing in the GM location.

 

*DRIVESHAFT:  Must be painted white and have front and rear hoops – no chains.  Two steel drive shaft hoops mandatory.  No aluminum drive shafts.

 

*ENGINE:

1.      Stock-appearing engines – stock location.  #1 plug even with ball joints.

2.      No angel plug or bow tie heads.  Cast iron heads only.  All cast iron, roller rockers allowed.  Dart S/R head #4266 A&B or #4267 A&B allowed.  No porting or polishing.

3.      Stock battery operated ignition only.

4.      Starters must be in working order.

5.      Air filters are mandatory, 4”x14” maximum, may stick through the hood for clearance reasons only.

6.      No big block engines.  Max compression ratio 12.0 to 1.

7.      Any stock cast iron intake or Edelbrock RPM Performer allowed.

8.      No electrical fuel pumps.  360 C.I.D. MAXIMUM.

 

*EXHAUST:

1.      Exhaust must exit rear of driver’s compartment.

2.      Maximum 2 ½” exhaust pipe.

3.      Exhaust will be securely mounted with hangers.

4.      Mufflers mandatory, no more than 100 decibel at 100 feet.

5.      Headers allowed under car only.

 

*FIRE EXTINGUISHER: A 3 lb. ABC type only.  Must be working and located in easy reach of driver and track personnel.

 

*FIRE SUITS:  All drivers MUST wear an approved fire suit in good/safe condition in all events.

 

*FUEL:  Pump gas only.  No additives are allowed.

 

*FUEL SYSTEM:

1.      No Nitrous Oxide systems allowed.

2.      Fuel cells mandatory – must have steel containers and secured to frame.

3.      No fuel lines in the driver’s compartment.

4.      Fuel cells 8” minimum ground clearance.

5.      No electric fuel pumps.

 

*HELMETS: Mandatory in all events.  Must be Snell 95 approved and in good/safe condition.

 

*NECK BRACE: An approved neck brace must be worn.

 

*REGISTRATION:  All drivers and owners must be registered in order to compete in any event.  Registration for all drivers and owners is $25.00.  Advance registration may be done by mail by sending registration fees to Whittemore Speedway – P.O. Box 265 – Whittemore, MI 48770 or at the speedway during Test & Tune sessions prior to opening day.

 

*RIDE HEIGHT: 4” minimum.

 

*SEAT BELT: Mandatory.  Five (5) point minimum.  Quick release lap belt securely mounted to roll cage or frame.  Must be coded and dated 5 year maximum.

 

*SUSPENSION – FRONT AND REAR:

1.      Suspension components must be stock.  No cutting, heating or modifying.

2.      After market bushing and shock relocation allowed.

3.      Weight jacking devices allowed.  No driver operated weight jacking devices.

4.      Heavy-duty hubs (racing type) with 9/16” studs allowed.  NO WIDE 5;s.

5.      All lug nuts, 1” minimum.  ½” studs minimum.

6.      Racing spindles allowed.  CAST IRON ONLY.

7.      Adjustable shocks allowed, heim ends allowed.  No aluminum or coil-over shocks.

8.      Adjustable sway bars allowed.

 

*TRANSMISSION:

1.      Stick or automatic only.

2.      Automatic transmission cooler must not be in driver’s compartment.

3.      Must have working converters.

4.      Must be vented into an overflow can.

5.      No made for racing transmissions.

 

*TIRES:  Hoosier Sportsman 27.0/8.0/15 & 26.5/8.0/15 (any combination).  Tires must not protrude outside of fenders.

 

*TOW HOOKS:  Mandatory both front and rear.  They must be at least 5/16” chain – no cable.

 

*WEIGHT:   3200# - 55% left side weight maximum with driver after race.

 

*WHEELS:  made for racing wheels only.  Any offset.  8” wide maximum.  Wheel spacers allowed.

 

*WINDOW NET:  Approved driver side window net with quick release mechanism securely attached to roll cage is mandatory.
