The Accused

The Accused

1988

Stars: Jodie Foster, Kelly McGillis, Bernie Coulson, Leo Rossi.

Director: Jonathan Kaplan.

Plot: Jodie Foster gives a stunning performance as a gang rape victim seeking justice against her rapists. Foster plays Sarah Tobias, a poor, drug-using girl who one night stumbles into a bar acting very sexy towards the other men around her. Though she has a boyfriend, she's still sleazy and starts to dance with one of the men who wants to do more than dance. After he forces her onto a pinball machine, he rips her clothes off and starts to have sex with her. His friends hold her down while he continues to have sex. Later, his other friends engage in the rape and she finally escapes and runs around screaming. She hires Kelly McGillis as her lawyer but because Sarah's a pot head and was drinking heavily, she doesn't have a strong case.

My Thoughts: I remember watching this movie and just being blown away by the performances, especially Foster's role. The characters are very real and believeable. The rape scene is shown very graphic and is one of the most disturbing moments I've ever seen on film. This isn't just a conventional rape movie, there are many twists that are brought to the movie that make it very exciting. Foster won a very well-deserved Oscar for her portrayal as Sarah Tobias. I highly recommend this movie but the rape scene is very disturbing and graphic which some people might not be able to swallow.
