Bad Boys

Bad Boys

1983

Stars: Sean Penn, Esai Morales, Ally Sheedy, Eric Gurry.

Director: Rick Rosenthal.

Plot: This is the story of a troubled youth Mick O'Brien(Sean Penn) who gets sent to a juvenile prison. At first, when he first arrives, of course everyone hates him and picks on him. He doesn't really have any friends but making friends in jail is pretty tough. He later on does form a friendship with his inmate Horowitz(Eric Gurry) who shows him the ropes of the place and tries to help him out. After a while in the prison he starts to gain respect from some of the other prisoners except one who hates him. Esai Morales stars as Paco Moreno who's sworn to kill Mick. Before being sent to prison, Mick had a girlfriend, J.C. Walenski(Ally Sheedy) who he loved greatly. She was raped one night and Mick went out for revenge of the rapists which lead to his time in the prison. As I said before, at first the other prisoner's roughed up Mick, but he later proved that he was strong enough to take them on and gained some power in the prison. In one scene, he beats the living hell out of Paco in his cell which earns him high honors. He was then on entitled to give out the different jobs to the inmates and he didn't have to do any. As in most prison movies, he tries to escape but fails at his attempts. It's Mick's duty to stay alive and not get in trouble so that he may be released and go back home to J.C.

My Thoughts: I think this is a really powerful and great prison movie. You may be wondering why I only listed four actors and that's because the movie really only revolved around those four people. There were other people in the film, but they weren't as important as these four. Unlike many prison movies where the new guy comes in and acts like he's the boss of the place, Sean Penn's character has to earn this power and respect from the other inmates. There are many fight scenes in the movie which are pretty graphic but the director never tries to glorify the violence. He uses it to show the viewers how dangerous and violent prison life is like. Ally Sheedy does a great job playing the girlfriend who stands behind him and we can tell that she really loves him. Also, Eric Gurry's character Horowitz is funny at times and he stands up against the warden's and the authorities of the prison even though he knows what the consequences are going to be. I like the tension that builds up between Mick and Paco that finally explodes at the conclusion of the movie. I thought that the ending could have been better, but it was still a good ending. There's one scene in the cafeteria that shows total chaos with all the inmates fighting that's really intense and is just a great scene. As I said, this movie is really powerful and some might find disturbing, but except for the weak ending, I think it's an excellent movie and I'd highly recommend it.
