Keep Calf Island As It's Been

This page will have commentary on why the Island should remain available for the recreational use of the people of Greenwich, and on why a transfer in title to a federal agency (or a group acting under federal control) would inevitably restrict the people's access. A island that generations of Greenwich residents have known as one of the few local places offering a sense of adventure would effectively be gone.

The Y's board is attempting to kill the fatted calf. With the proceeds from the sale, they plan to expand the YMCA complex on the Post Road at Mason Street. The result will be a monsterously large YMCA, sporting an appendage the Chamber of Commerce and its minions have been striving to obtain in Central Greenwich for decades: a parking garage. We are truly on the road to White Plains. They have no beautiful islands, and their Y has a parking garage.

On top of this, is the apparent fact that the board has no right at all to sell the island. The deed conveying title to the YMCA specifically required that the Y or its successor organizations maintain the island for active recreation, including picnicing and overnight camping. Hopefully, enough people in town can rise up and defend, among other things, the property rights issue at stake here.
