LinksLS 2000 Tips
Here I hope to post some useful tips and charts that I think can/will help fellow Linksters
out there!!! Page made and last updated: Wednesday, August 2nd 2000 10:40 am.
Putting
I know there are a lot of different ways people putt, but these are some of my opinions.
- When aiming, I like to position the aim bar at the same distance as the hole, not halfway or whatever. I do this because it is much easier to see how much break I'm actually playing.
- When faced with really difficult putts, try to imagine how much the putt will break and how far to one side it will go. Then just aim that distance away on the opposite side of the cup.
- If your feet are on a downhill slope, the ball will break a little more than you will expect.
- Always make sure you get the ball to the hole. It only has a chance if it gets there. I don't know how many putts I've left 1-3 inches short! (Never up, Never In)
- Always play enough break into your putt. I notice that a lot of newbies don't play nearly enough break on putts, and they miss it 5 feet to one side! Play a little extra just to make sure.
- On the sharp breaking 3 footers, I like to play just a tad outside the hole, and hit with a firm stroke, and miss the bottom click a little to the right.
Chipping
- When chipping, I like to stay with either my PW or my SW. Leave the LW, gets affected too much by the wind. My favorite and most comfortable is the PW.
- If it's over 30 yds. switch to a straight shot with a SW instead of chipping.
- When chipping uphill, obviously add a couple yards/feet onto the shot to take into account the fact that it will hit into the upslope and stop it's momentum. The opposite is a given for downhill chips.
- Use your pitching wedge for longer chips and play about the last third of break.

Driving
- When you are on the tee box, you can hold down F11, and move your ball as you would a drop. A icon will appear and you drag it to where you want it, then release F11. Helpful to use with holes that have tree branches in the way.
- When the wind is blowing in your face, try hitting a punch shot from the tee to hit your driver a tad farther, or you can go to Shot Setup, and put the ball farther back in your stance. This will make it go lower, thus making it less affected by the wind.
- When the wind is blowing sideways, don't try to counter-act the wind by playing a slice in a right to left wind. Instead, aim farther out to the side it's blowing from, and let the wind carry it, (allowing for it to go farther).
- Grip it and Rip it!!!
Miscellaneous
- In the sand, try chipping. This works great for me for shots upto 30 yds. around the green. Just change to a chip setup and using a PW or SW pick it clean, and it will go about the same distance as a chip would.
- When dropping, you don't have to drop within 2 club lengths. Instead you can drop back in the fairway as long as it's not closer to the hole!!
- For every 30 ft. of elevation change, add or subtract(add if it's uphill, subtract if downhill) 10 yds. from total distance.
- Shots from the rough will not go as high, and usually do run a lot more than from the fairway. Not hitting a perfect snap at the bottom decreases the quality of the shot from the rough tramendously.
- When in the woods, don't always go for the hero shots, you'll usually get hit by the ricocchet!! Take your medicine, chip out, and try to save par.
- Don't be afraid to use a lot of extra windows. I use a Top View, Forward Landing, Reverse Landing, and a Green Cam. Also Chat during online play.
