Violist Rebecca Young began her musical studies as a violinist at the age of five. At age sixteen she switched to viola. Four years later she became the youngest member of the New York Philharmonic, where she is currently Associate Principal Violist. As a student, Ms. Young spent three summers at the Tanglewood Music Festival, only to return there in 1993 as the Principal Violist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of her tenure with the orchestra was when she joined Yo-Yo Ma, Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony as the viola soloist in Strauss's "Don Quixote." (Ultimately, Ms. Young decided to return to her family in New York. She resumed her Associate Principal position with the Philharmonic in September, 1994). As a chamber musician, Ms. Young has performed with many renowned groups, including the Boston Chamber Music Society, the Boston Symphony Chamber Players, the New York Philharmonic Ensembles, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Most notably, she performed Schubert's Trout Quintet in Tanglewood, July, 1995, with Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax, Pamela Frank and Edgar Meyer. The piece was subsequently recorded on the Sony Classical label (to be released in late January, 1996). This group will do an encore performance of The Trout on "Live from Lincoln Center", February 14, 1996.
