Chapter 28

"Whatcha think Mandi," Candice asked her best friend after telling her the whole story.
"I, babe..Listen. Maybe you put the ring in your pocket and forgot about it and you just daydreamed about the caller."
"A daydream," Candice mumbled. "Yeah, a daydream."
"You ok," Amanda asked.
"Yeah I'm fine, I'm gonna head down to Florida for a couple. I'll call ya when my plane lands ok? Bye babe."
"Bye."

July 18, 2000

"Yeah I'm fine, yes. I know yeah love ya too bye Mandi." Candice flipped her cell phone back into her purse and started toward the exit.
Candice unlocked her door and slowly walked into the dark, empty, cold house. "I don't know why I came down here," she mumbled climbing up the stairs to her room.

"What was that," he asked sitting up in bed.
"Nothing, go back to bed," she mumbled shoving her face into her pillow.
"No, I heard something," he insisted.
"Ok you got me," she sat up rubbing her eyes. "Ok you wanna know what that sound was?"
"Yeah, yeah tell me," even in the dark she could see his smile and smiled herself.
"My house is haunted," she wrapped her arms around his waist.
"Really," he asked his smile turned into a grin.
"Pat, no," she laughed as he climbed out of her bed.
"C'mon we're gonna go find that ghost," he pulled her out of the bed. "If I were a ghost I'd be in the basement!"
"If you were I ghost I wouldn't date you," she laughed. "Can't we turn on the lights?"
"No..Shh..you're gonna scare the ghost away," he held her hand tighter and lead her down the stairs.
"All right," she giggled following her boyfriend.

Candice threw herself up in her bed, a damp sweat formed on her brow. She turned on the light and glanced around the room. "Why am I dreaming about him?" She asked herself out loud standing up and going downstairs. She grabbed a cup and made some coffee then walked out on her patio. The Florida sun was just starting to light the sky. "Another beautiful day," she whispered taking a drink.

He watched her pull off her shirt, still not noticing he was standing in her doorway was enough to make him laugh but he held it inside. "Doesn't matter what your friends tellin' you," she sang pulling the white tank top over her head and turning around. "Holy shit. What the hell are you doing?" She screamed pulling her shirt all the way down.
"I'm sorry," he whispered chuckling.
"I really don't see how this is funny," she hissed.
"Ok, ok sorry," he took off his sunglasses.
"So, what brings you to my house at what eight in the morning--I didn't even know you could get up this early," she snickered.
"Um," he sat on her bed. "I could ask you the same thing."
"Right, one this is my house and two I can do whatever I want. Now why are you here?"
"Why are you in Florida?"
"Don't answer me with a fucking question J!"
"I'm here cuz I live here, what bout you?"
"Personal stuff," she mumbled sitting next to him.
"Oh don't give me that shit," he pulled out a cigarette.
"Don't smoke in my house," she pulled the cigarette out of his hand.
"Ok, ok I wasn't gonna smoke it anyway," he whispered. "So, why are you here, really, tell me Candi."
"You really wanna know Aj?" He nodded. "Well, let me bring you up to date with my life. Pat, my boy-exboyfriend, died because of me. It's been a little less than a month, I haven't ate nor slept. I can't do anything but feel sorry for myself and work on my site where I can't even be me!"
"I'm sorry," he whispered hugging her.
"Don't you have a girlfriend Aj?"
"Yeah, she knows I'm here, she doesn't mind."
"She doesn't mind you watching other people undress?"
"Well," Aj laughed.
"You're unbelievable Aj you know that."
"Ok now stop trying to change the subject and finish your story."
"Um..I can't tell anyone the truth..I can't lie anymore either. I know no one will believe me if I go 'yeah I know the Backstreet boys'. I don't know what I'm living for anymore Aj." He wrapped his arms around her again. "I really don't know Aj."
"Don't tell them you know the Backstreet Boys, tell them you know five guys..Howie, Nick, Aj, Brian, and Kevin..we're people. You know us, not the Backstreet Boys."
"Aj you're a great friend," Candice looked up at him and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
"Now call Nick," he stood up.
"What?"
"Call Nick," he handed her a phone.
"But," she hesitated.
"Do it now," Aj shoved the phone in her hand and walked out of the room. She slowly dialed the number Aj had written on a piece of paper.

"Hello?"
"Nick?"
"Yeah."
"This is Candice."
"Oh hey, again, just don't hang up this time ok."
"Right, Nick I gotta tell you the truth," she whispered.
"Truth about what," Nick asked as he stopped everything he was doing.
"Ok Nick, ok Nick," she mumbled "Ok Nick."
"Dammit just tell me!"
"Ok, well when I came back from Florida Pat stayed behind he said he wanted to get some stuff from my house and when," Nick cut her off.
"Pat came over to my house," Nick whispered confused.
"He what?!" Candice screamed.
