Jaguar


Jaguars are roughly 5 to 8 ½ feet (1.6 to 2.6 meters) long, including their 1 ½ to 2 ½ foot (45 to 75 cm) tail. They weigh 150 to 300 pounds (68 to 136 kilograms). Their fur is gold to brownish-yellow. There are dark rings with light brownish color on the insides of the rings. On their face and under belly there are black spots. Their belly is sometimes lighter.

There is 95 to 110 days of pregnancy; the female then gives birth to 2, 3 or 4 babies. Newborns are 1 ½ to 2 pounds (0.7 to 0.9 kilogram). They stay with their mother for approximately 2 years. At 4 years old they are full adult size.

Jaguars live in forests, shrubby areas, grasslands and anywhere the have good coverage.

The scientific name is Panthera onca.
