Summer!!
As I'm lying there,
the smell came back,
The long ago
smell of childhood,
Before the cigarettes
and the taste of bitterness
obliterated the innocence.

The musty books,the
crowded library walls,
The make believe world
of fairy tales and
rose trellises.

The heady smell of summer,
a world of paper fans
and the sweet smell 0f
honeysuckle and grass.

The carnival sounds
drifting from blocks away,
The memories of slight
headaches and nausea,
The cotton candy
and candy apples.

The days of long ago,
but only a reach of
the imagination away
Never to be again -
only awakened briefly
in the drifting breeze
which cools only faintly
Elusive,like happiness.
